To review:
The given blank space in the statement, “the ______ provides a simple mathematical model for a nonevolving population, also called a _______ population, in which ______ frequencies do not change over time. Are such a population likely to be found in nature? _______.”
Introduction:
A population comprises of all the species living in there natural habitat. Further species are able to interbreed with another in a population. Hardy Weinberg principle is also known as Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and it states that the allele and the frequency of genotype present in the population will remain constant from one to another generation in the absence of evolutionary influences.
Explanation of Solution
Hardy–Weinberg equation describes a simple method to evaluate a non-evolving population via a mathematical formula. For this nonevolving population, it was assumed that the allelic frequencies to remain constant and thus the equality is termed as the equilibrium population. This consists of certain hypothetical conditions which are not likely to be seen in the real life.
This principle is a model, law, theorem, and it states that all the alleles present and even the frequencies of genotype present in one population will remain constant throughout the generations in the absence of other external evolutionary influences. Such population is not found, since every organism is constantly evolving as external evolutionary patterns like temperature, pressure, and climate plays a major role in adjustments and adaptations made by the organisms.
The hardy Weinberg principal provides a simple mathematical model for a nonevolving population, also called an equilibrium population, in which allele frequencies do not change over time. Are such a population likely to be found in nature? No.

(Note: you should not need to do any math to figure this one out. Just think through general interpretations of each parameter) Or = -0.14, A = 0.87, RO = 0.5 r = 3.0, A = 0.22, RO = 0.5 r = 0.22, A = 1.25, RO = 3.0 %3! r = = 0.22, A = -0.14, RO = 0.5arrow_forwardYou will need to complete this question on a separate piece of paper. Scan or take a picture of it and upload the answer. Suppose you have a population of bats growing according to the logistic equation. If the carrying capacity is 400 bats, Demonstrate at which population sizes in relation to K will the population have - a positive growth, negative growth or stable growth. A Create a graph of dN/dt vs N (be sure to label the axes) for this (ii) - Use arrows to population of bats. Indicate on the graph - (i)- k, indicate when the instantaneous rate of change the highest and when is it stable (be sure to label the arrows). B . - Since K = 0.5, the population we are studying is experiencing ________ growth due to density _______ factors. exponential; dependent exponential; independent logistic; dependent logistic; independentarrow_forwardGeometric growth refers to the growth of populations that do not have overlap in their generations. Annual plants and some insects are good examples where adults die before young individuals mature to reproduce. Pacific salmon are an example of a vertebrate with geometric growth because spawning (egg laying). The equation for geometric growth is: N=2 No; where 2= finite rate of increase and t=number of time intervals. Question A1. Calculate the population size after 10 time intervals (N10) if No = 120 and 2 = 1.1. Question A2. If N1 =750 and N2 = 890, calculate 2arrow_forwardContrast exponential and logistic (= sigmoid) growth of a population. Under what conditions might you expect a population to exhibit ex-ponential growth? Why can exponential growth not be perpetuated indefinitely?arrow_forward
- A continuously growing population of bears has a population size of 500 and its intrinsic rate of increase is 0.07 per year. Assuming that this rate of increase remains the same, about how long should it take for the population to reach 1,000? (Note: “e” is about 2.7 and the natural logarithm of 2 is about 0.70).arrow_forwardYou are studying a density - dependent turtle population that has the following relationships for the birth rate b’ and the death rate d’ as a function of population size (N) : b’ = 0.10 + 0.03 N - 0.0005 N ^2 d’ = 0.20 + 0.01 N Plot these functions in the same graph and discuss the population dynamics of the turtle. How does this model differ from the simple logistic model with linear birth and death functions?arrow_forwardPopulations are unable to sustain exponential growth for very long because environments are not unlimited. Eventually growth rates are reduced by a shortage of food, space or some other factor. These factors constitute what is known as ‘environmental resistance’ and their effect upon growth may produce a logistic growth curve. The data shown in the Table below illustrate this pattern of growth for three species’ populations, each beginning with a population of 10 individuals. - African elephants are threatened by poachers, who kill the elephants for their tusks. Both male and female elephants can grow tusks. There are some elephants that are tuskless (do not grow tusks). In the elephant population of Gorongosa National Park, the number of female elephants was monitored for many years. The graphs show the total female elephant population and the percent of tuskless females in that population from 1970 to 2015. Which of the following describes the trend in the female elephant population from 1970 to 1995 ? The overall population decreased, and the proportion without tusks increased. Answer A: The overall population decreased, and the proportion without tusks increased. A The overall population decreased, and the proportion without tusks decreased. Answer B: The overall population decreased, and the proportion without tusks decreased. They live on gravel at the edge of streams. The pebbles in the gravel are variable in color and the grasshoppers have colors similar to the gravel. A scientist is interested in the maintenance of the variation in grasshopper color. She adds one hundred grasshoppers that are the same color (light brown) to the population. There already were some light brown grasshoppers present and there are light brown pebbles present as well. She notices that birds feeding on the gravel start catching the light brown grasshoppers more than you would expect. Once the proportion of light brown grasshoppers is back down to its original level then the birds stop eating them so much. What evolutionary force is acting on grasshopper color?arrow_forward
