Does an equation representing demand, as in Example 4, have positive or negative slope? Why is this so? What about the equation representing supply?
Example 4 The Supply and Demand for Hand-Crafted Jewelry
Malik sells hand-crafted turquoise, Native American jewelry at regional craft shows. At a price of $20 per necklace, he is willing to buy 30 necklaces from his suppliers. However, at this price, his suppliers will provide him with 9 necklaces. However, if he will pay $60 per necklace, he can only sell 15 necklaces per show. At this higher price, his suppliers will provide him with 29 necklaces. Assuming that the equations relating price to demand and to supply are both linear, what should the price per necklace be for supply to equal demand?

- LIFE SCIENCE APPLICATIONS HIV Infection The time interval between a persons initial infection with HIV and that persons eventual development of AIDS symptoms is an important issue. The method of infection with HIV affects the time interval before AIDS develops. One study of HIV patients who were infected by intravenous drug use found that 17 of the patients had AIDS after 4 years and 33 had developed the disease after 7 years. The relationship between the time interval and the percentage of patients with AIDS can be modeled accurately with a linear equation. Source: Epidemiologic Review. a. Write a linear equation y=mt+b that models these data, using the ordered pairs (4,0.17) and (7,0.33). b. Use your equation from part a to predict the number of years before half of these patients will have AIDS.arrow_forwardCholesterol. The age, x, and LDL cholesterol level, y, of two men are given by the points (18,69) and (27,122) . Find a linear equation that models the relationship between age and LDL cholesterol level.arrow_forwardNeurology The average weight of a male child’s brain is 970 grams at age 1 and 1270 grams at age 3. (a) Assuming that the relationship between brain weight y and age t is linear, write a linear model for the data. (b) What is the slope and what does it tell you about brain weight? (c) Use your model to estimate the average brain weight at age 2. (d) Use your school’s library, the Internet, or some other reference source to find the actual average brain weight at age 2. How close was your estimate? (e) (d) Do you think your model could be used to determine the average brain weight of an adult? Explain.arrow_forward
