Returning to Exercise 23, explain why it is reasonable for the graph representing the falling crate to be shaped as it was. How does this conform to your intuition? Would a linear equation have been an acceptable model?
23. Falling bodies. A plane is dropping emergency food supplies to relieve famine in a less-developed country. Crates are dropped, and the height of the crate above the ground at time t is given by the equation
a. Graph this equation.
b. Are there any values for t that it would not make sense to use for this equation because of the physical characteristics of a falling crate?
c. Find the time at which the crate will strike the ground.

- Cholesterol. The age, x, and LDL cholesterol level, y, of two men are given by the points (18,69) and (27,122) . Find a linear equation that models the relationship between age and LDL cholesterol level.arrow_forwardGlobal Warming In 1990, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicted that the average temperature on Earth would rise 0.3C per decade in the absence of international controls on greenhouse emissions. Let t measure the time in years since 1970, when the average global temperature was 15C. Source: Science News. a. Find a linear equation giving the average global temperature in degrees Celsius in terms of t, the number of years since 1970. b. Scientists have estimated that the sea levels will rise by 65cm if the average global temperature rises to 19C. According to your answer to part a, when would this occur?arrow_forwardPaying for college Rolf must earn 5040 for next semesters tuition. Assume he works x hours tutoring algebra at 14 per hour and y hours tutoring Spanish at 18 per hour and makes his goal. Write an equation expressing the relationship between x and y, and graph the equation. If Rolf tutors algebra for 180 hours, how long must he tutor Spanish?arrow_forward
