Question
Chapter 43, Problem 3ITD
Summary Introduction
To review:
The rate of fractures in the two groups of children having osteogenesis imperfecta (OI).
Introduction:
Osteogenesis is a genetic disorder found in newborn babies also. The children suffering from OI are prone to bone damage. The child may be prone to bone fractures ranging from four to five to hundreds of fractures per year based on the level of intensity of the disease. This disease can respond to certain drug treatments and the damage of the bones can be slowed down causing a reduced number of fractures per year.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the activation of certain signal transduction pathways
causes calcium to be removed from bones, leaving them brittle and more likely to break
under moderate pressure.
Current research suggests that osteoporosis can be initiated under conditions of low cal-
cium intake in order to increase the availability of calcium for other biological roles in the
body.
Which of the following describes the conditions that would be most likely to initiate
osteoporosis?
A
B
с
D
insufficient amounts of calcium to allow the replication of DNA molecules during cell
division
insufficient amounts of calcium to maintain the membrane potential established by the
sodium-potassium pump
insufficient amounts of calcium ions to facilitate efficient transduction of neuronal
signals
insufficient amounts of calcium to be used in the fixation stage of the Krebs cycle in
photosynthesis
What are the requirements of bone grafts that are being used for tissue engineering applications? Describe briefly bone grafts that are already applied in the clinic. Imagine that you are not seeding cells on the bone graft prior to implantation, you are demanding cell migration from neighborhood tissues via blood. In this regard, what are the required characteristics of bone grafts to support bone regeneration and vascularization?
Describe the action of two drug therapies used to treat osteoporosis
