Chapter 25, Problem 25.6CC
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The effects on meiosis if a meiotic cell is unable to make proteins of the synaptonemal complex.

Introduction: Meiosis is a type of cell division which produces four haploid cells and every cell is genetically different from the parent cell. Meiosis starts with a diploid cell and gives rise to four haploid daughter cells. Meiosis is divided into meiosis I and meiosis II. Meiosis I is further divided into prophase I, metaphase I anaphase I, and telophase I. Meiosis II is further divided into prophase II, metaphase II, anaphase II, and telophase II.

What are the major differences between mitosis and meiosis? Explain this both in terms of the different steps of each event and with regards to the final products of each event. Remember to mention the events which are unique to meiosis and why they are significant.
A sperm cell from the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster contains four chromosomes. How many chromosomes would be present in a spermatogonial cell about to enter meiosis? How many chromatids would be present in a spermatogo- nial cell at metaphase I of meiosis? How many would be present at metaphase II?
If a cell with 24 chromosome pairs underwent meiosis, how many total chromatids would be in each gamete?  What are three (3) differences between mitosis and meiosis?
