Concept explainers
To determine: The percentage of white tigers produced if two normal looking, heterozygous tigers mate.
Introduction: Mendel’s findings are known as Mendelian genetics. Mendel gave three laws which are the law of segregation, the law of independent assortment and law of dominance. Mendel worked with common garden pea and chose seven visibly identifiable characteristics of pea plants which were displayed in different forms in two varieties of plants. Mendel used these characteristics to develop the three given laws.
To determine: The percentage of white tigers expected to be cross-eyed.

- In rabbits, the gene that codes for a spotted coat is dominant over the gene that codes for a solid coat, and the gene for the coat's black color is dominant over the gene for the coat's brown color. If a spotted, black-coated rabbit mates with a solid, brown-coated rabbit, what are the genotypes and phenotypes of their offspring?arrow_forwardEye color is a heritable trait in ground squirrels. Green eyes (G) are dominant and yellow eyes (g) are recessive. You mate a heterozygous female with a homozygous recessive male. What is the genotypic ratio of their offspring? Group of answer choices 1 GG : 2 Gg : 1 gg. 2 GG : 1 Gg : 1 gg. 1 Gg : 3 gg. 2 Gg : 2 gg.arrow_forwardIn a population of North American rabbits, brown fur color is dominant to white fur color. If two heterozygote rabbits mate, what is the chance of having a white furred bunny?arrow_forward
- Hair length is incompletely dominant in Chihuahuas. If a homozygous long-haired Chi mates with a homozygous short-haired Chi, their heterozygous offspring have medium-length hair. If two heterozygous Chihuahuas mate, what is the probability that their pups will have long hair, medium hair, or short hair? L = long hair allele l = short hair allelearrow_forwardA yellow female Labrador retriever was mated with a brown male. Half of the puppies were brown, and half were yellow. Explain how the same female, when mated with a different brown male, could produce only brown offspring. The first male was bb EE, and the second male was bb Ee. The first male was Bb EE, and the second male was Bb Ee. The first male was bb Ee, and the second male was bb EE. The first male was bb Ee, and the second male was Bb Ee. The first male was bb Ee, and the second male was bb ee.arrow_forwardIn some animal species, being tall is dominant over being short. If a homozygous dominant individual mates with a short individual, what is the chance that their offspring will be heterozygous?arrow_forward
- If the homozygous dominant turtle mates with a heterozygous turtle, what ratio of brown-shell to green-shell turtles do we get?arrow_forwardIn hamsters, black fur (B) is dominant over brown fur (b) and long fur (L) is dominant over short fur (l). A black, long furred female whose mother had brown fur and whose father had short fur is mated with a black, short furred male whose father had brown, long fur. What is the probability that the first three offspring will have brown, long fur? What is the probability that the first offspring will have black, long fur? What is the probability that one of the first three offspring will have black, long fur and the other two brown, short fur?arrow_forwardIn hamsters, black fur (B) is dominant over brown fur (b) and long fur (L) is dominant over short fur (l). A black, long furred female whose mother had brown fur and whose father had short fur is mated with a black, short furred male whose father had brown, long fur. What is the probability that the first offspring will have either brown, long fur or black, short fur? What is the probability that the first offspring will have brown, long fur and the second black, short fur?arrow_forward
- In pea plants, purple flower color is dominant to white flower color. If a homozygous dominant flower mates with a white flower, what is the chance of having white-flowered offspring?arrow_forwardIn rural northeast Kansas domesticated cats are becoming wild, and biologists are observing that wildcats occur in three colors. Fur color is controlled by a single gene that exhibits incomplete dominance. A homozygous dominant cat is blue (BB), a homozygous recessive cat is red (bb), and a heterozygous wildcat will be purple (Bb). What would be the expected phenotypes of the offspring if a blue wildcat mates with a red wildcat? Develop a Punnett square and list the genotypes as well.arrow_forwardIn cats, white patches are caused by the dominant allele P while p/p individuals are solid colored. Short hair is caused by the dominant allele S, while s/s cats have long hair. A longhaired cat with patches whose mother was solid-colored and shorthaired mates with a shorthaired, solid-colored cat whose mother was longhaired and solid-colored. What kinds of kittens can arise from this mating and in what proportions? Outline the cross and assign genotypes, phenotypes, and proportions in the space below. Plong hair, white patchesxshort hair, solid colored s/s ; P/pS/s ; p/p F1 progeny: 1/4 s/s ; P/plong hair, white patches 1/4 s/s ; p/plong hair, solid colored 1/4 S/s ; P/pshort hair, white patches 1/4 S/s ; p/pshort hair, solid coloredarrow_forward
