Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The skeletal structure of Vitamin A should be converted into its complete structure along with lone pairs on hetero-atoms.
Concept Introduction:
Skeletal formula is also known as shorthand formula. In
Complete structural formula of a molecule represents all the atoms of molecule, types of bonds connecting atoms and how atoms are connected to each other.
(b)
Interpretation:
The molecular formula of β-carotene should be determined from its skeletal structure.
Concept Introduction:
Skeletal formula is also known as shorthand formula. In organic chemistry is a form of representation in which only molecular bonding and molecular geometry is shown. Carbon and hydrogen atom is common in organic chemistry. Carbon atoms are generally shown by vertices of the bonds. Unlabelled vertex will represent carbon atom attached to number of hydrogen atom s required to fulfill its valency (i.e. four).
Molecular formula gives information about which type of atoms are present in the compound and the actual number of each atom. To determine the molecular formula of any chemical compound from the given structure, simply count the number and types of atoms present in chemical compound. And then place the number of atoms of that particular atom at the subscript position.
