Department of Civil and Coastal Engg. University of Florida Sivaramakrishnan Srinivasan Spring 2024 TTE 4106/ TTE5006 – [Advanced] Urban Transportation Planning Assignment 1 Trip Generation Date Assigned: Monday February 26 Date Due: Friday March 8 NOTE: Submit your responses as a single word or PDF file (upload to canvas) I expect independent work on all assignments. I am not interested in just your final answers, I am also looking for the procedures you used to arrive at your results. So, provide enough details in your responses -> demonstrate to me that you understand concepts . It would be a good strategy to first run all the models using SPSS and save all the results in a word document or a spreadsheet. You can then use these results offline to address the other questions. Include the appropriate SPSS outputs with your responses for each question in your word / pdf document (I don’t need a copy of your SPSS syntax and output files). Use a 90% confidence level while interpreting the model parameters. Use the SPSS file data_assignment1.SAV. The following are the variables in this file (sample size 1585 households) ntrips Number of weekly trips made by household hhsize household size (=nadult + nchild) nadult number of adults in the household nchild number of children in the household ncar number of cars income household income (1000s of $) resloc residential location (1=city, 2=suburb, 3=rural) (1) Estimate a model of ntrips as a function of hhsize, ncar, and income. [1] Are these coefficients on hhsize, ncar, and income statistically significant? How did you arrive at your conclusions? [3] Interpret the coefficient (sign and magnitude ) on income. [2] (2) Estimate a model of ntrips as a function of nadult, nchild, ncar, and income. [1] What can you infer about the relative impacts of adults and children on household trip generation? [2] How is this different from the relative impacts of adults and children on household trip generation implied by model (1)? [2]
(3) Categorical variables are converted into binary or “dummy” variables before being introduced in regression models. Create the following three binary variables: (1) city = 1 if resloc = 1 and 0 if resloc = 2 or 3 (2) suburb = 1 if resloc = 2 and 0 if resloc = 1 or 3 (3) rural = 1 if resloc = 3 and 0 if resloc = 1 or 2 Estimate a regression model of ntrips as a function of nadult, nchild, ncar, and income, suburb and rural. [2] What do you conclude about the effect of residential location on trip making from this model? [2] (4) Explain how and why SST (Total Sums of Squares), SSE (Residual Sums of Squares), and SSR (Regression Sums of Squares) vary across models (1), (2), and (3). Summarize the different errors measures from the models in the table below [3] SST SSE SSR Model 1 Model 2 Model 3 (5) Estimate a regression model of ntrips as a function of hhsize and ncar (i.e., a model that treats household size and car ownership as continuous variables). [1] What is the impact of the second car on household trip generation 1 ? How is this different from the impact of the first car? [2] What is the impact of the third household member on trip generation 2 ? How is this different from the impact of the second member? [2] (6) Estimate regression models of ntrips as a function of household size and number of cars that treat household size and car ownership as categorical variables. As car ownership can be one of 0, 1, and 2 and household size can go from 1 to 5, the binary/indicator variables to be created are (taking 0 cars and 1 person households as the reference categories): [2] car1 = 1 if ncar = 1 and 0 otherwise car2 = 1 if ncar = 2 and 0 otherwise hhsize2 = 1 if hhsize = 2 and 0 otherwise hhsize3 = 1 if hhsize = 3 and 0 otherwise hhsize4 = 1 if hhsize = 4 and 0 otherwise hhsize5 = 1 if hhsize = 5 and 0 otherwise What is the impact of the second car on household trip generation? How is this different from the impact of the first car? [2] What is the impact of the third household member on trip generation? How is this different from the impact of the second member? [2] 1 As car ownership increased from 1 to 2 cars, what is the change in the number of household trips? 2 As household size increases from 2 to 3 persons what is the change in the number of household trips?
