Chapter B, Problem B.25P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The correct IUPAC name for 2-propylbut-1-ene is to be written.

Concept introduction:

For naming an alkene, the longest continuous carbon chain is the one that contains C=C bond. To assign the root, begin with the name of the analogous alkane and replace the suffix by ‘ene’. The suffix ‘ene’ accounts for a C=C  functional group. For a chain, C1 begins at the end that allows the C=C bond the lowest possible locator numbers. For a chain, the lowest locator numbers are written immediately before the ene suffix. The substituents are written at the beginning of the IUPAC name.

2. A student named a compound as 6-methyl-6-ethylhept-1-en-5-one. Even though one can draw a correct structure based on that name, the name itself is incorrect according to the IUPAC naming conventions. Draw a structure for the compound (based on the above name), and then name the compound correctly. Structure Correct Name
Give the IUPAC name for the given compound. Step 7: Put all the pieces together and name the alkene. IUPAC Name: (Z)-3-(1'methyl)ethyl-4-propyloct-3-ene Incorrect • Step 1: Identify the number of carbons in the longest chain • Step 2: Identify the parent chain from 3 options • Step 3: Construct the parent name • Step 4: Identify substituents and locants • Step 5: Identify substituent order • Step 6: Prioritize substituents and determine
For the following reaction, draw the major organic product and select the correct IUPAC name for the organic reactant. If there is more than one major product, both may be drawn in the same box. When drawing hydrogen atoms on a carbon atom, either include all hydrogen atoms or none on that carbon atom, or your structure may be marked incorrect. H. HBr Select the correct IUPAC name for the organic reactant: 2-methylbutene 2-methyl-3-butene 4-methyl-1-pentene 3-methyl-1-butene
