The CFO of a consulting engineering firm is deciding between purchasing Ford Explorers and Toyota 4Runners for company principals. The purchase price for the Ford Explorer will be $30,750. Annual maintenance costs for the Explorer are expected to be $575 per year more than that of the 4Runner. The purchase price for Toyota 4Runners is 35,250 The trade-in values after 3 years are estimated to be 50% of the first cost for the Explorer and 60% for the 4Runner. (a) What is the incremental ROR between the two vehicles? (b) Provided the firm’s MARR is 15% per year, which vehicle should it buy?
A remotely located air sampling station can be powered by solar cells or by running an above ground electric line to the site and using conventional power. Solar cells will cost $16,600 to install and will have a useful life of 5 years with no salvage value. Annual costs for inspection, cleaning, etc., are expected to be $2400. A new power line will cost $31,000 to install, with power costs expected to be $1000 per year. Since the air sampling project will end in 5 years, the salvage value of the line is considered to be zero. At an interest rate of 10% per year, (b) what must be the first cost of the above ground line to make the two alternatives equally attractive economically?
A diesel engine uses type A filter and high end lubricating oil costing $5.50 per liter. With this filter the oil and filter have to be change every 500 hours of operation, and 5 liters of oil have to be added every 100 hours. This filter costs $148 per piece. 80 liters of oil fill the engine.
Another type, Filter B, costing $120 may be used with a lower grade of oil costing $4.80 per liter. However if this filter is used, the oil and the filter had to be change every 300 hrs and 10 liters are added after each 150 hrs the engine is used. Which type of filter would you recommend?

- Economical solar energy and energy from fusion have been identified as two of engineering's grand challenges. While work continues on these grand challenges, conservation of energy from non-renewable sources is vital. On a practical level, installing low thermal emissivity windows (low-e windows) on buildings can contribute to energy conservation. Installing low-e windows on a small office building is estimated to cost $10,500. The windows are expected to last 9 years and have no salvage value at that time. The energy savings from the windows are expected to be $2,525 in the 1st year. After the 1st year, the savings are expected to increase by $200 each year due to escalating fossil fuel costs. MARR is 12% per year and annual worth is the preferred measure of economic worth. Part a Are the low-e windows an economically attractive investment? The new loan would be for the current balance (i.e. the balance at the end of the 36th month on the old loan) with monthly payments at a nominal interest rate of 3% per year for 4 years. A one-time financing fee for the new loan is $10,000. Your company's MARR is 9% per year on a nominal basis. Determine if the new loan is economically advantageous. - The Toro Company is expanding its El Paso, Texas plastic molding plant as it continues to transfer work from Juarez, Mexico contractors. The plant bought a $1.1 million precision injection molding machine to make plastic parts for Toro lawn mowers, trimmers, and snow blowers. - Since many U.S. Navy aircraft are at or near their usual retirement age of 30 years, military officials want a precise system to assess when aircraft should be taken out of service. A computational method developed at Carnegie Mellon maps in 3-D the microstructure of aircraft materials in their present state so that engineers can test them under different conditions of moisture, salt, dirt, etc. Military officials can then determine if an aircraft is fine, is in need of overhaul, or should be retired. If the 3-D system allows the Navy to use one airplane 2 years longer than it normally would have been used, thereby delaying the purchase of a $20 million aircraft for 2 years, what is the present worth of the assessment system at an interest rate of 8% per year?arrow_forward17) A professional photographer who specializes in wedding-related activities paid $24,800 for equipment that has a $2,000 estimated salvage value after five years.
