Concept explainers
A spacecraft is equipped with nine sensors, designed to gather data to attempt to reconstruct how the Martian planet may have lost its atmosphere. A reaction vessel is used as part of a chemical analysis process. The chemical reaction proceeds most efficiently at a temperature of 27 degrees Celsius [°C]. The 1.2-gallon [gal] reactor initially contains 0.3 moles [mol] of an ideal gas at a pressure of 1.95 atmospheres [atm]. To reach the ideal temperature for the reaction, the pressure in the reactor will be changed from the current conditions, while the volume and amount will remain constant. Determine the change (increase or decrease) in the pressure of the reactor in units of pascals [Pa] necessary to allow the reaction to proceed at the most efficient temperature.

- A cylindrical pipe with a cross-sectional radius r = 1.40[cm] is plunged into a l = 2.30[m] tall open water drum that is initially completely filled with water (pwater = 1000 [kg/m3]). The pipe goes h1 = 0.35 [m] above the drum before dropping down h2 = 3.50 [m] below the base of the drum as shown. The cross-sectional radius of the top side of the pipe is R = 2.20 [cm].A. How fast is the water going out of this pipe?B. What's the liquid's pressure at the top of the pipe? Assume that the system is exposed to 1.00 [atm] of air pressure.C. What's the maximum height the pipe can go above the drum before the water stops flowing out of the pipe? For liquid flow to be continuous, the liquid’s pressure must not fall before its vapor pressure. Assume that vapor pressure, in this case, is 2.30 [kPa].arrow_forwardA robot is exploring Charon, the dwarf planet Pluto's largest moon. Gravity on Charon is 0.278 meters per second [m/s2].
