Concept explainers
Whether Kepler’s three statements and Newton’s equations for gravitational attraction are laws or theories.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
A law in science is a statement about the observation in regard to certain situations and thereby predicting similar outcomes. A theory in science is the explanation as to why a certain result is the observed outcome or it explains scientific result.
Kepler’s three statements and Newton’s equations for gravitational attraction are called laws because they help in predicting the outcome of some situations but they don’t offer any explanation as to why these situations act out as they do. Therefore they were never theories and will never be.
Conclusion:
Kepler’s three statements and Newton’s equations for gravitational attraction are laws and not theories and never will be.
