Chapter 7, Problem 7.43P

The voltage output from a J-type thermocouple referenced to 0 °C is to be used to measure temperatures from 50 to 70 °C. The output voltages vary linearly over this range from 2.585 to 3.649 mV.

  1. If the thermocouple voltage is input to a 12-bit A/D converter having a ±5-V range, estimate the percent quantization error in the digital value.
  2. If the analog signal can be first passed through an amplifier circuit, compute the amplifier gain required to reduce the quantization error to 5% or less.
  3. If the ratio of signal-to-noise level (SNR) in the analog signal is 40 dB, compute the magnitude of the noise after amplification. Discuss the results of 7.40b in light of this.

d. At t=0, temperature of water suddenly changed from 25°C to 100°C. The transfer function of the sensor is given as V=(0.06V/°C) (T- 20°C). The output voltage was measured every 0.1s and recorded in Table 1. Find the equation explaining the dynamic behaviour of the sensor. A thermocouple is connected to a data acquisition system which is used to measure temperature of air in a duct. For a step-input, the system measures the temperature accurately at steady state. Assume the dynamics of the sensor(thermocouple) limit the system's speed of response. The sensor has a time constant of 0.5 sec. In a given situation, the duct's air temperature varies with time as a sinusoid of frequency 2 rad/s with amplitude of 10°C. In this case, the measured temperature by the system is a sinusoid as wellI, as a function of time. The amplitude of this (measured) sinusoid, at steady-state, is closest to: Select one: а. 10°C b. 5°C С. 3°C O d. 7°C
