Question
Chapter 7, Problem 51PP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
Racemization of (S)-2-iodopentane in a solution of sodium iodide in DMSO must be explained.
Concept introduction:
The racemization is the formation of both the enantiomers simultaneously. If the molar ratio of both enantiomers is the same, then it’s complete racemization. Generally, it takes place in an unimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN1) reaction as inversion and retention take place simultaneously.

In an aqueous solution containing sodium bicarbonate, aniline reacts quickly with bromine to give 2,4,6-tribromoaniline. Nitration of aniline requires very strong conditions, however, and the yields (mostly m-nitroaniline) are poor.Explain why nitration of aniline is so sluggish and why it gives mostly metasubstitution.
3-If the p-value of alkaline saponification of methylbenzoate is 2.38 and the rate
constant for saponification of methylbenzoate under these conditions is 2x104
calculate the rate constant for hydrolysis of methyl-m-nitrobenzoate.
Give the mechanism of the following reactions. Briefly explain why any selectivities occur.
