Interpretation:
Whether the writer’s sentiment about not running out of metals is agreeable or not has to be explained.

(b)
Interpretation:
Two challenges connected with increasing the recycling of batteries have to be named.
Concept introduction:
Electrochemical cell is a device capable of converting chemical energy into electrical energy or induces chemical energy by electrical energy. In the galvanic cell spontaneous redox reaction takes place. Redox reaction means the reaction in which the oxidation state of the atoms changes due to the occurrence of both reduction and its complementary oxidation reactions. The element under oxidation reaction loses electron whereas the element in the reduction gains electron.
Rechargeable battery work because they use reaction are reversible, while non-rechargeable battery they use reactions are non-reversible.
Energy density of battery: High specific energy density batteries are attracting growing attention as possible power sources for electronic vehicles.

Chemistry In Context
- An aqueous solution of an unknown salt of gold is electrolyzed by a current of 2.75 amps for 3.39 hours. The electroplating is carried out with an efficiency of 93.0%, resulting in a deposit of 21.221 g of gold. a How many faradays are required to deposit the gold? b What is the charge on the gold ions (based on your calculations)?arrow_forwardAluminum is produced commercially by the electrolysis of Al2O3 in the presence of a molten salt. If a plant has a continuous capacity of 1.00 million A, what mass of aluminum can be produced in 2.00 h?arrow_forwardOne of the few industrial-scale processes that produce organic compounds electrochemically is used by the Monsanto Company to produce1,4-dicyanobutane. The reduction reaction is 2CH2CHCH+2H++2eNC(CH2)4CN The NC(CH2)4CN is then chemically reduced using hydrogen gas to H2N(CH2)6NH2, which is used in the production of nylon. What current must be used to produce 150.kg NC(CH2)4CN per hour?arrow_forward
- The development of lightweight batteries is an ongoing research effort combining many of the physical sciences. You are a member of an engineering team trying to develop a lightweight battery that will effectively react with O2(g) from the atmosphere as an oxidizing agent. A reducing agent must be chosen for this battery that will be lightweight, have nontoxic products, and react spontaneously with oxygen. Using data from Appendix I, suggest a likely reducing agent, being sure these conditions are met. Are there any drawbacks to your selection?arrow_forwardZinc is produced by electrolytic refining. The electrolytic process, which is similar to that for copper, can be represented by the two half-reactions Zn(impure,s)Zn2++2eZn2++2eZn(pure,s) For this process, a voltage of 3.0 V is used. How many kilowatt hours are needed to produce one metric ton of pure zinc?arrow_forwardA silver coulometer (Study Question 106) was used in the past to measure the current flowing in an electrochemical cell. Suppose you found that the current flowing through an electrolysis cell deposited 0.089 g of Ag metal at the cathode after exactly 10 min. If this same current then passed through a cell containing gold(III) ion in the form of [AuCl4], how much gold was deposited at the cathode in that electrolysis cell?arrow_forward
