Christian is making a Tyrolean traverse as shown in the
figure. That is, he traverses a chasm by stringing a rope
between a tree on one side of the chasm and a tree on
the opposite side, 25 m away. The rope must sag
sufficiently so it won't break. Assume the rope can provide
a tension force of up to 26 kN before breaking, and use a
"safety factor" of 10 (that is, the rope should only be
required to undergo a tension force of 2.6 kN) at the
center of the Tyrolean traverse.

A 525 g squirrel with a surface area of 880 cm2 falls from a 5.6-m tree to the ground. Estimate its terminal velocity. (Use a drag coefficient for a horizontal skydiver.) Assume that the squirrel can be approximated as a rectangle prism with cross sectional area of width 11.2 cm and length 22.4 cm. What's the squirrels terminal velocity ? Not when it hits the ground.
What will be the velocity of a 52.5 kg person hitting the ground, assuming no drag contribution in such a short distance?
A water tank is being towed on an uphill road that makes 14° with the horizontal with a constant acceleration of 3.5 m/s2 in the direction of motion. Determine the angle the free surface of water makes with the horizontal. What would your answer be if the direction of motion were downward on the same road with the same acceleration?

- A ski that is placed on snow will stick to the snow. However, when the ski is moved along the snow, the rubbing warms and partially melts the snow, reducing the coefficient of kinetic friction and promoting sliding. Waxing the ski makes it water repellent and reduces friction with the resulting layer of water. A magazine reports that a new type of plastic ski is especially water repellent and that, on a gentle 210 m slope in the Alps, a skier reduced his top-to-bottom time from 61.0 s with standard skis to 43.0 s with the new skis. Determine the magnitude of his average acceleration with (a) the standard skis and (b) the new skis.
