Review. Figure P5.15 shows a worker poling a boat—a very efficient mode of transportation— across a shallow lake. He pushes parallel to the length of the light pole, exerting a force of magnitude 240 N on the bottom of the lake. Assume the pole lies in the vertical plane containing the keel of the boat. At one moment, the pole makes an angle of 35.0º with the vertical and the water exerts a horizontal drag force of 47.5 N on the boat, opposite to its forward velocity of magnitude 0.857 m/s. The mass of the boat including its cargo and the worker is 370 kg. (a) The water exerts a buoyant force vertically upward on the boat. Find the magnitude of this force. (b) Model the forces as constant over a short interval of time to find live velocity of live boat 0.450 s after the moment described.

- A 17-year-old employee working for Southern Virginia College's (SVC) bookstore during the summer months is helping prepare for Fall sales. It's a good way to make extra money, and the teen is saving for a car. Books from one supplier are shipped to the SVC bookstore in large crates equipped with rope handles on all sides. On one occasion, the teen momentarily pulled with a force of 707 N at an angle of 33.7° above the horizontal to accelerate a 121-kg crate of books. The coefficient of friction between the crates and the vinyl floor is 0.55. Determine the acceleration experienced by the crate in m/s2. Use the approximation g ≈ 10 m/s2.arrow_forwardA 200 g hockey puck is launched up a metal ramp that is inclined at a 30° angle. The coefficients of static and kinetic friction between the hockey puck and the metal ramp are μs = 0.40 and μk = 0.30, respectively. The puck's initial speed is 50 m/s. What vertical height does the puck reach above its starting point?arrow_forwardA 200 g hockey puck is launched up a metal ramp that is inclined at a 30° angle. - Many birds can attain very high speeds when diving. Using radar, scientists measured the altitude of a barn swallow in a vertical dive; it dropped 208 m in 3.0 s. The mass of the swallow was estimated to be 0.018 kg, and its cross-section area as 5.6 x 10-4 m2. What was the drag coefficient for this swallow as it dove?arrow_forwardA 16-year-old employee working for Southern Virginia College's (SVC) bookstore during the summer months is helping prepare for Fall sales. The channel has been anchored to a frictionless horizontal table top. You are looking down at the table. Forces exerted by the air are negligible.
