Concept explainers
(a).
To describe:
Which of the two animals produce more nitrogenous waste.
Introduction:
Based on the temperature of the body, the animals are primarily classified into two types namely warm-blooded animals and cold-blooded animals. Since this classification provides less amount of information, it is further classified into three types based on the mechanism of body heat regulation. The three categories are heterotherms, poikilotherms and homeotherms, endotherms and exotherms. In another way, the animals are classified into three types based on the food source. They are herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.
(b).
To describe:
The excretory product formed in mammals and the vertebrate that produce shelled eggs and the adaptive advantages of these nitrogenous waste.
Introduction:
The nitrogenous waste is the unwanted substance that needs to be eliminated from the body. The major excretory organ is the kidney. But in some animals, other excretory organs are involved namely gills, the skin of fish, malphigian tubule of insects, nephridia of nematodes, contractile vacuoles of protozoa, and so on. The nitrogenous waste is excreted in three forms namely ammonia, urea, and uric acid.

- In the aquatic world, osmoregulation is very important. Please describe what would happen at the cellular level as well as organismal level to a freshwater fish that is placed in salt water.arrow_forwardHummingbirds, pocket mice, and young Chiricahua leopard frogs are all about the same size, and all live in the southwestern deserts. Compare and contrast their nitrogenous wastes, and explain why there is such a difference in their urine.arrow_forwardTheory predicts that when both terrestrial and freshwateranimals evolve higher metabolic rates, they can be expected toevolve greater challenges to maintaining water balance. Explainwhy this is so for both terrestrial and freshwater animals.arrow_forward
- Regulation of physiological variables occurs primarily through mechanisms. a. negative feedback b. positive feedback c. urine formation d. feedforward e. myogenicarrow_forwardBirds and mammals are endotherms. They maintain body temperature by producing heat through metabolism. Endothermy is energetically expensive for an organism, yet endotherms have become the dominant group of tetrapods. What is a major evolutionary advantage of endothermy? A. Endothermy allows greater independence from water. B. Endothermy decreases the amount of time an animal spends hunting or foraging. C. Endothermy widened the range of habitats available and increased speciation. D. Endothermy allows more body resources to be used for growth and reproduction.arrow_forwardRegarding osmoregulation, what physiological and behavioral changes would occur as a fish migrates from a freshwater stream to the ocean?arrow_forward
- Humans have the most urgent needs for a continuous supply of_______?arrow_forwardWhich of the following animals must drink water to achieve osmotic balance? A. A marine bony fish such as a flounder B. A marine cartilaginous fish such as a shark C. A freshwater larval amphibian such as a tadpole D. A freshwater mollusc such as a snail E. All of the abovearrow_forwardWhich of the following matches is correct?a. nephrons—earthwormsb. Malpighian tubules—insectsc. protonephridia—cnidariansd. nephridia—flatwormsarrow_forward
- The desert kangaroo rat does not produce dilute, liquid urine, but instead produces thick, highlyconcentrated urine. Explain how having loops of Henle that are proportionally longer than otherterrestrial animals allows for this. How is production of thick, concentrated urine advantageous toa desert animal?arrow_forwardAnimals that exhibit endothermy usually: Group of answer choices A. can consume less food per unit of body mass than ectotherms, for survival. B. can be active across a wider range of environmental temperatures than ectotherms. C. spend a greater proportion of their energy budget than ectotherms on growth and reproduction. D. A and B E. A, B, and Carrow_forwardYou are studying renal function in different species of mammals that are found in very different environments. You look at species from a desert environment and compare them with ones from a tropical environment. The desert species would be expected to havea. shorter loops of Henle than the tropical species.b. longer loops of Henle than the tropical species.c. shorter proximal convoluted tubules than the tropical species.d. longer distal convoluted tubules than the tropical species.arrow_forward
