Insect Control DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) was used extensively from 1940 to 1970 as an insecticide. It still sees limited use for control of disease. But DDT was found to be harmful to plants and animals, including humans, and its effects were found to be lasting. The amount of time that DDT remains in the environment depends on many factors, but the following table shows what can be expected of 100 kilograms of DDT that has seeped into the soil.

a. Show that the data are exponential.
b. Make a model of D as an exponential function of t.
c. What is the half-life of DDT in the soil? That is, how long will it be before only 50 kilograms of DDT remain?

- Weight Versus Height The following data show the height h, in inches, and weight w, in pounds, of an average adult male. h 61 62 66 68 70 72 74 75 w 131 133 143 149 155 162 170 175 a Make a power model for weight versus height. b According to the model from part a, what percentage increase in weight can be expected if height is increased by 10?arrow_forwardRichter Scale Exercise S-1 through S-6 use elementary properties of Richter Scale. - Mortgage Rates The following table is taken from the website of Freddie Mac. It shows rates for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages since 1970. y=Year r=Mortgagerate 1975 9.05 1980 13.74 1985 12.43 1990 10.13 1995 7.93 2000 8.05 2005 5.87 2010 4.69 2015 3.84 a. Explain in practical terms the meaning of r(2003). b. Use the table to estimate the value of r(2003).arrow_forwardRichter Scale Exercise S-1 through S-6 use elementary properties of Richter Scale. If the relative intensity of a quake is multiplied by 10t, how is the Richter scale reading affected?arrow_forwardTorontos Jewish Population The table gives the population of Torontos Jewish community at various times. Source: The Mathematics Teacher. Plot the population on the y-axis against the year on the x-axis. Let x represents the years since 1900. Do the data appear to lie along a straight line? Plot the natural logarithm of the population against the year. Does the graph appear to be more linear than the graph in part a? Find an equation for the least squares line for the data plotted in part b. If your graphing calculator has an exponential regression feature, find the exponential function that best fits the given data according to the least squares method. Take the natural logarithm of the equation found in part d, and verify that the result is same as the equation found in part c. In Section 11.1 on Solutions of Elementary and Separable Differential Equations, we will see another type of function that is a better fit to these data.arrow_forward
