Question
Chapter 36, Problem 4NERQ
Summary Introduction
Antitussive is a drug that reduces or suppresses coughing. It inhibits or reduces the activity of neurons in the cough center located in the brain. It is mostly used to stop nonproductive coughing. The antitussive drugs are classified as opioid and nonopioid. The opioids are used to suppress the cough reflex in the medullar region of the brain, and nonopioids will act on the stretch receptors and cause numbness in the respiratory tract (thereby preventing the stimulation of the cough reflex).
