Concept explainers
To calculate: To identify independent and dependent variables
Answer to Problem 21E
Independent variable is number of quarters
Dependent variable is amount of time on the meter
Explanation of Solution
Given: Number of quarters you put into a parking meter affects the amount of time you have on the meter.
Formula Used:
A variable is an one that we are trying to measure and are of two types:
- Independent Variable: That stands alone and isn’t changed by the other variables
- Dependent Variable: That depends on the other variables
Calculation:
Given that number of quarters you put into a parking meter affects the amount of time you have on the meter.
Variables are “number of quarters” and “amount of time on the meter”
Here, value of variable “number of quarters” is not affected by any values, so it is an independent variable
Whilevalue of variable “amount of time on the meter” will change as the value of variable ““number of quarters” changes, so it is a dependent variable
Conclusion:
Hence, Independent variable is number of quarters and Dependent variable is amount of time on the meter
