The shot put is a track-and-field event in which athletes throw a heavy ball—the shot—as far as possible. The best athletes can throw the shot as far as 23 m. Athletes who use the “glide” technique push the shot outward in a reasonably straight line, accelerating it over a distance of about 2.0 m. What acceleration do they provide to the shot as they push on it? Assume that the shot is launched at an angle of 37°, a reasonable value for an excellent throw. You can assume that the shot lands at the same height from which it is thrown; this simplifies the calculation considerably, and makes only a small difference in the final result.

- Falcons are excellent fliers that can reach very high speeds by diving nearly straight down. To pull out of such a dive, a falcon extends its wings and flies through a circular arc that redirects its motion. The forces on the falcon that control its motion are its weight and an upward lift force—like an airplane—due to the air flowing over its wings. At the bottom of the arc, as shown, a falcon can easily achieve an acceleration of 15 m/s2. At the bottom of the arc, as shown, what is the direction of the net force on the falcon?A. To the left, opposite the motionB. To the right, in the direction of the motionC. UpD. DownE. The net force is zero.arrow_forwardFalcons are excellent fliers that can reach very high speeds by diving nearly straight down. A falcon starts from rest, does a free-fall dive from a height of 30 m, and then pulls out by flying in a circular arc of radius 50 m. Which segment of the motion has a higher acceleration?A. The free-fall diveB. The circular arcC. The two accelerations are equal.arrow_forwardYou’ll now apply the horizontal launch to a car accident example. In this scenario, a car driver named Joshua Horton says he was driving at the speed limit of 45 mph when he hit an icy patch and drove through a guard rail of the 15 m tall bridge, before landing 24 m from the base of the bridge. Tes1ng shows that driving through the guard rail lowers a car’s speed by 10 m/s. QUESTION 3: Given the distance that the car landed from the bridge, determine what speed Joshua was actually driving before leaving the bridge. Was he telling the truth or lying? - A shot putter launches a 7.260 kg shot by pushing it along a straight line of length 1.650 m and at an angle of 34.10° from the horizontal, accelerating the shot to the launch speed from its initial speed of 2.500 m/s (which is due to the athlete’s preliminary motion). The shot leaves the hand at a height of 2.110 m and at an angle of 34.10, and it lands at a horizontal distance of 15.90 m.What is the magnitude of the athlete’s average force on the shot during the acceleration phase? (Hint: Treat the motion during the acceleration phase as though it were along a ramp at the given angle.)arrow_forwardA ball is thrown from the top of a tower at an angle of 40o to the horizontal with an initial speed of 6.60 m/s. During its flight, the only force acting on the ball is the force of gravity. It takes 3.55 s until the ball hits the ground. How tall is the tower?arrow_forwardDuring launches, rockets often discard unneeded parts. A certain rocket starts from rest on the launch pad and accelerates upward at a steady 3.4m/s^2 . When it is 245m above the launch pad, it discards a used fuel canister by simply disconnecting it. Once it is disconnected, the only force acting on the canister is gravity (air resistance can be ignored). What total distance did the canister travel between its release and its crash onto the launch pad?arrow_forward
- An eagle carries a fish with its talon flying 15 m/s at an angle 25 degrees. At some point, this fish is able to wiggle free form the eagle and is released, resulting in the fish falling to the ground. If it takes the fish 3 seconds to reach the ground: How high was the fish when released? What was the magnitude of the fishe's velocity when it reached it's highest point after wiggling free?arrow_forwardJulie is an avid skydiver. She has more than 300 jumps under her belt and has mastered the art of making adjustments to her body position in the air to control how fast she falls. If she arches her back and points her belly toward the ground, she reaches a terminal velocity of approximately 120 mph (176 ft/sec). If, instead, she orients her body with her head straight down, she falls faster, reaching a terminal velocity of 150 mph (220 ft/sec). Since Julie will be moving (falling) in a downward direction, we assume the downward direction is positive to simplify our calculations. Julie executes her jumps from an altitude of 12,500 ft. After she exits the aircraft, she immediately starts falling at a velocity given by v(t) = 32t. She continues to accelerate according to this velocity function until she reaches terminal velocity. After she reaches terminal velocity, her speed remains constant until she pulls her ripcord and slows down to land. On her first jump of the day, Julie orients…arrow_forwardA marble rolls off the edge of a tabletop and then lands on the floor 80 cm away from the base of the table. - A 0.2 kg rock is projected from the edge of the top of a building with an initial velocity of 7.56 m/s at an angle 58° above the horizontal. Due to gravity, the rock strikes the ground at a horizontal distance of 10 m from the base of the building. Assume: The ground is level and that the side of the building is vertical. The accelera- tion of gravity is 9.8 m/s2. 58 h 10 m How tall, h, is the building? Answer in units of m. 7.56 m/s Buildingarrow_forwardA person launches a rock with an initial speed of 200 m/s at an angle of 45 degrees above the horizontal. What is the speed of the rock when it reaches its maximum height? Give your answer to 2 significant figures.arrow_forwardA 4 kg squirrel is launched from a cannon 7m above sea level and is fired at a 45 degree angle from the ground, launching the squirrel at 150 m/s. At the squirrel's peak height, an eagle snatches the squirrel and takes a leave of 303 degrees. Assume that the additional weight of the squirrel cuts the air speed velocity of the eagle by 75%. After flying for two minutes, the squirrel drops an acorn. A wing with a heading of 155 degrees accelerates the acorn at 7 m/s^2. Where does the acorn land? Assume that: 1. The squirrel reaches an instant velocity upon firing the canon. 2. Gravitational acceleration is 10m/s^2. 3. Air resistance is negligible. 4. The eagle experiences no knockback and cancels out the squirrel's velocity. 5. The air speed velocity of the eagle is 12 m/s. 6. The acorn sat around so long that it is now deep underground.arrow_forward
