Chapter 24, Problem 13TYK
Summary Introduction

To review:

An imaginary phylogenetic tree has to be created for an ancestral species along with ten descendants. A monophyletic group, a polyphyletic group, and a paraphyletic group have to be marked on the tree. The identified groups, which are marked on the tree must match the definitions of mentioned three groups.

Introduction:

The pictorial representation of an evolutionary relationship that exists among the living organisms is shown by a phylogenetic tree. The phylogenetic tree is based upon the similarities and differences in the genetic and morphological traits. The diversity of an organism can be easily studied using the phylogenetic tree as it indicates the relationship between the organisms.

Match the following phylogenetic group terms with their correct definitions: Monophyletic: A group that includes a common ancestor and all of its descendants Monophyletic: A group that includes a common ancestor but not all of its descendants Paraphyletic: A group that includes a common ancestor and all of its descendants Paraphyletic: A group that includes a common ancestor but not all of its descendants Polyphyletic: A group that includes a common ancestor and all of its descendants Polyphyletic: A group that does not include the most recent common ancestor of its members
Examine the following phylogenetic tree illustrated in Figure shown in the first picture. In general, what does a phylogenetic tree illustrate?  How do you compare the relationships of organisms BB, CC, and DD?  Given the following organisms in the Table in the second picture, number them in terms of which is relatively closest and distant. Number 1 refers to closest.
Assign the correct phylogenetic term to this image. In this image, the red circles represent species included in the taxon while the white ones are not included in the taxon. The pink bars represent the lineages presented in the taxon. monophyletic O prophylactic polyphyletic paraphyletic
