Question
Chapter 21, Problem 66P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation: The treatment provided by hydroxyurea for the elimination of symptoms of sickle cell anemia is to be explained.
Concept introduction: Sickle cell anemia is a blood-related disorder that is inheritable and caused due to mutation in the hemoglobin gene. In this disease, the red blood cells (erythrocytes) lose their flexible biconcave (or round) shape and become sickle-shaped. Thus such sickle cells are not able to flow easily through the narrow blood capillaries and block them. They have a short life span (10 to 20 days) as that of healthy RBCs (121 days). These cells are not able to transport oxygen throughout the body.
