Even though he is classified serial killer and contract killer he differs from typical serial killers. Unlike your typical serial killer who targets victims with a specific profile and will only target victims with the same specific profile, Mr. Kuklinski did the opposite and his victims were chosen at random. For Kuklinski, killings were only considered business for him and way for him to make money. At no time did he commit murder purposely to seek some type of sexual arousal. Also, he did not kill because he suffered from any psychological dysfunction. Although someone of his kills did occur during the heat of passion, but for the majority of kills that he has accumulated were all hits. There is no real general profile of serial killers; each serial killer has a unique set of characteristics. In attempt to profile these types of criminals, there has been some common characteristic that serial killers have exhibited during child that has been mention in early in this paper. Research into serial killers is important partly because even though there is literature out there on serial killers, there is still not much known about these types of criminals. The purpose of this paper's focus on Mr. Kuklinski is to hopefully debunk stereotypes and myths in regards to serial killers. Popular or common belief of serial killers to deranged psychopathic people who are unhinged. However, Kuklinski is the opposite he is cold hearted and possesses a full mental capacity to where he understand everything he doing and full ramification of his action. He completely understands that he is indeed committing first-degree murder and if he were to get caught he would punish with life in
This essay aims to examine weather serial killers are born a certain way and their genetics define their psychotic tendencies or whether they're a product of a bad environment that they grew up. This essay looks at recent killings in the late 20th century as there is more information on the killers from this period and it's easier to gain details about their childhoods. Whilst I will look at various different killers to reach more rounded conclusions (see appendix for comparison table), this essay will focus on four in detail to examine the debate; Ted Bundy (1946-89), Jeffery Dahmer (1960-1994), John Wayne Gacy (1942-1994) and Gary Ridgway (1949-present).
In the essay “What Makes a Serial Killer?” author LaDonna Beaty discusses the causes of serial killers. Beaty states, serial killers are the most hated and feared out of all the criminals. Over 5000 people will be victimized each year by serial killers alone, says Beaty. Her research estimates there are 350 serial killers within a large society. Beaty stated that investigations on serial killers had been dated back to 1911. However, she also asks, what does a serial killer look like? Beaty gives the readers great details on her ideal serial killer. For example, he will typically have bloodshot eyes, curly black hair, strong jaws, abnormal ears, straight thin lips, and menacing grins. Although, today, we can’t expect serial killers to have
Ever heard of the zodiac killer? He was a serial killer who operated in northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The killer's identity remains unknown. The Zodiac murdered victims in 5 states between December 1968 and October 1969. The general profile for a serial killer is a person who commits a series of murders, often with no apparent motive and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern. There are many types of serial killers. There are natural born killers who are born willing to kill someone, insane killers which have mental and physical disorders and criminaloids who do not exhibit specific traits. The childhood of a serial killer would typically be someone who is neglected by their family mainly their mothers. They tend to be antisocial and have anger issues. Poor families often cannot provide what the child always wants so they might commit crimes to get want they want. Abused children have a higher chance of being killers also because they have a lot of built up aggression and anger. All can lead to substance abuse which is never a good thing to mix in with a potential serial killer in the making. General behavioral progression from pre-crime to post-crime are that they use killing as a source of relief. Before committing a serious crime they could have built up anger and hatred. They is a high possibility that they are suffering from depression and anxiety too. After killing someone the killer feels relieved. They also feel
Every serial killer has their own twisted ways to doing their crimes. Richard Kuklinski is no different from other killers in this way. He started young, killing cats and other animals for the fun of it and to feel “empowered”. Different from other killers, he committed his first murder in middle school. Kuklinski beat a bully death and then disposed of it. A lot of their character traits relate back to their young family life. A common pattern in several serial killers is that their parents abused them in some way or the other. Richard Kuklinski, or the “Iceman”, is like these serial killers in the way that he was abused as a young boy. Although there are an uncertain amount of things that led Kuklinski to his brutal, senseless killings, some of the factors stand as: The abuse from his parents, his emotionless personality, and the money he earned from these killings.
A serial killer is a person who murders three or more people, usually in service of abnormal psychological gratification, with the murders taking place over more than a month and including a significant break which can also be called a "cooling off period” between them. There are different types of serial killers. Some are mission oriented serial killers; others are visionary killers. There are equally power and control killers and thrill or hedonistic killers. There are many serial killers in the world at large with different motives for killing. Some people are serial killers on their own while others kill as a couple. In this case, we will talk about serial killers as a couple. We have the Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo who have a mix of hedonistic killers and power and control killers. We equally have Ray and Faye Copeland which also falls under power and control killers. The paper will focus on the background, victims, and trail of Ray and Faye Copeland and Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo.
Serial murder crime though rare, is not a a new phenomenon. This crime has been committed for centuries and will continue to be a crime that is committed throughout the world. It is unfortunate and scary that this is probably one of the most serious of crimes that cannot be prevented. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, serial murderers commit their crimes because they want to. Rehabilitation is not obtainable for serial killers due to their inability for remorse and empathy, or to see people as people and not objects(Knight 2006). This research paper will focus primarily on serial murder within the U.S. First and foremost, a legal definition provided by the U.S. Department of Justice will be presented to set forth the discussion of this research paper. As follows will be a detailed discussion explaining serial killer typologies with the use of examples of known serial killers in the U.S. Types of serial killers are: power oriented, mission oriented, visionary, and hedonistic, each typology will be clearly defined and explained. Some serial killers can have a mixture of each typology’s characteristic. Serial killers that will be discussed and used as examples to represent the content of this research paper will be, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, Robert Berdella, Jeffery Dahmer, and lastly the most prolific serial killer in American history, Gary Ridgeway. Problems with studying serial killing, are that because of rarity and access. Most of what we think
A serial killer is traditional defined as the separate killings of three or more people by an individual over a certain period of time, usually with breaks between the murders. (Angela Pilson, p. 2, 2011) This definition has been accepted by both the police and academics and therefore provides a useful frame of reference (Kevin Haggerty, p.1, 2009). The paper will seek to provide the readers with an explanation of how serial killers came to be and how they are portrayed in the media.
Richard Kuklinski was not a serial killer. He was a contract killer. The other reasons he killed was if these people were not only disrespectful to him but to the society. For example, he saw someone urinating outside in public and he ended up killing this man. He didn’t like people to direspect the environment or other people He had some sympathy in the fact that he didn’t kill women or children. When he did kill people he didn’t feel bad about this, as a normal person would. He showed some signs of pyscopatheness such as the example above. Serial killers killed because they felt they needed to kill to have some feel of power or perfection They would then get a ‘high’ off of it and want to do it again and again. Richard would not get this, he would just do it and go back to living his normal life.
Richard Kuklinski was born on April 11, 1935 in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was raised in an abusive environment. His father would beat him for no reason at all and all he ever knew was hate because that is all he’s ever known. His father Stanley would beat him with an iron rod and lock him in the basement for hours or days without food. Stanley went so far one night that he killed Richard’s younger brother due to hitting him in the head. His father then abandoned the family when Richard was 16. I believe his upbringing is a large contributing factor of him becoming a serial killer.
The Iceman was a clean and methodical killer who was able to live his murdering life for over thirty years. He used many tactics ranging from poisoning to strangling and cleaning up the crime scenes with no traces he was ever there. This violence and murdering he illustrated was a result from his unstable childhood and limited education. However, Richard Kuklinski was able to live a normal American life with his wife and kids and not be suspected of anything, especially the ones closest to him. Serial killing is not just a typical hobbie one enjoys in their free time.
Richard Kuklinski is unique in many ways, one of which being his devotion to his job. However, it was nothing worthy of praise. Kuklinski’s death count reached nearly 200 people, with his first kill as just a teenager. To most, this sounds like a very extreme example of a serial killer; however, Kuklinski was not a serial killer. Every serial killer, or mostly every serial killer, is going to exhibit the same characteristics that all align to explain the crimes they commit. Serial killers commit horrific crimes that are unimaginable to the average person; however, Richard Kuklinski was not a serial killer, even though he exhibited most of the characteristics that a serial killer does. Richard Kuklinski’s upbringing, for example, is evidence and explanation for why he was the way he was.
The first thing that sets Richard Kuklinski apart is the fact that he has no conscience. Over and over again he killed based on the fact he was just told to. When asked in the interview why he killed and if he would if there was no reason to, he said, “yeah, I really did not have a reason to, and I just did it because.” With a slight grin on his face, he said he would kill for no reason. That really shows through as a pure psycho. Even worse than saying he would do it for no reason was when he described some of the times he killed this way. At one point in the interview, the Iceman described one of his most heartless
The idea of serial killers and the role they play in our lives has fascinated people since the cases of Jack the Ripper and H.H. Holmes, although serial murderers existed before them. The infamous and mysterious complexities of these cases have puzzled and terrified people for over a century. Perhaps due to the deviant and taboo nature of serial killings, people in our society and others have tried to attribute many reasons for why they occur. In this search for answers, one major scope has been widely left out of the research: the sociological imagination. It is through this method of understanding that I will attempt to explain the development of serial killers and apply theories that explain the frequency of serial killings in our society.
Serial killers are a widely studied group. Similarly, this paper will study the BTK killer, who strangulated ten victims to death over his fantasy of gaining control and power over someone’s life. This paper aims to link a contemporary serial killer to empirical research on this topic, with regards to their motivations and victim selection methods. It argues that Dennis’ victim selection can be explained through routine activities theory, where he needed a suitable target to act out his fantasy, a lack of capable guardianship so he would not get caught and a motivated offender, which he was due to his fantasy. Based on his killings, he was placed under the power and control typology of serial killers, as he appears to have a special interest in bondage. Also, issues with behavioral profiling is explained such as its vague descriptions and its use of an outdated personality and trait model. Also the issue of confirmation bias and selective thinking in behavioral profiles is discussed.
Richard Kuklinski, commonly known as “The Iceman” was a notorious contract killer in New Jersey. However, just because Kuklinski killed on a regular basis doesn’t mean that he is like the average serial killer. For many reasons, specifically regarding his family situation and his motivation, he is distinguishable from other serial killers. Even though he had differences from most serial killers, there are similarities. The similarities between Kuklinski and the serial killers we have studied is that the majority of them had an abusive childhood, they don’t feel anything when they kill, and they are psychopaths.
