Poetry is known to be a creative thought or impassioned feeling using language and is expressed in many places in the world. A poem can have many different meanings according to how an individual interprets it. Various literary devices are used to bring out that interpretation and the sense of what the person thinks that is going to happen. In the poem “Saturday at the Canal” by Gary Soto and “Nothing Better” by The Postal Service the theme is sometimes in life you may go through tough times but it is up to you whether they will continue. Some literary devices that show the coming up from tough times are figurative language, imagery, and the mood of the poems/songs.

“Good writing excites me, and makes life worth living”(Harold Pinter). There are many aspects of writing to create a successful piece that readers will become engaged in. Literary devices are one way for authors to express various details in their stories. The more details a writer has, the more likely their writing is to capture readers. Literary devices enhance and better the writing, making it more entertaining for the audience. They help provide the story with important information without stating it outright.

In the short stories “Stones” and “To Every Thing There is a Season” the authors Sandra Birdsell and Alistair MacLeod both use literary devices in a similar manner in order to achieve their thematic objectives. This essay will compare the way the authors use three literary devices such as imagery, metaphor and similes in their short stories to portray the thematic objective of loss of innocence.

Short story fiction is a story that is shorter than a novel, has a few characters, and is about an imaginary event or person. Because short fiction is short the writer must capture and hold the reader’s attention within the first paragraph, which requires a mastery of literary technique. In Speak, mute Melinda was unable to overcome her struggle since she attempted to “dodge” the truth. However, when Melinda finally spoke out about what happened to her, she immediately felt better about the struggle she was dealing with. The main theme of the novel and ancillary texts is overcoming obstacles. This theme is expressed through the conflict, symbolism, and foreshadowing throughout the texts. Laurie Halse Anderson’s use of literary elements in Speak, as well as the devices in the article, “The Art of Resilience” and the poem “If” help the common theme of overcoming obstacles throughout a time of growth and change evolve throughout the story.

Stephen King’s action thriller 11.23.63 has the main character, Jake Epping, traveling back in time through a portal in Al’s Diner. His main goal throughout the novel is to research the past and stop JFK from being killed that fateful afternoon in Dallas Texas. King chooses many literary devices that make this story come alive and fun and easy to read.

Literatures work has always played an important role in our society throughout the history. Each works serves with different purposes and provide the readers with great benefits. It does not only give the audience enjoyments from the works, but it is also another way to teach the others in many different ways. Most work from the Native Americans that we learned from the lecture are to teach and persuade other people of strong values of life, such as “Iktomi and the Dancing Duck” and “Origin of the Sun Shower.” Literature is one of the most important ways to preserve wide range of knowledge and to pass down to each generation, which can also help the audience understand different things from the past. In the article “Why Community College Students Need Great Books, J.M. Anderson refers to literature as “a form of travel in time and space, allowing readers to experience vicariously what others have thought, felt, and even seen.” Experiencing literature takes the mind to another world and allows it to be free with imagination and creativity.

Some topics are more interesting to read than others. In an article called ‘Why Literature Matters’ written by Dana Gioia, this article can be viewed as highly persuasive because of the techniques he uses to get his points across to the audience .Gioia is able to build arguments though his use of evidence and different literary techniques.

Literature comes in all forms; its basically everything around us. Movies, books, newspaper, songs, posters, magazines, these are examples of literature. Like the many forms of literature, it also has many purposes; literature is used as a source of entertainment, it in forms people, and it also enlightens them with knowledge. Ever since we entered school, we have constantly been questioned, asked to reflect upon what we read and to analysis what we read, watch and see. All we have been doing since day one had been analysing literature. Don’t you think there must be a reason for all these years of analysing everything? I’ve finally come to the conclusion that all those years of analysing was to prove to us the power of literature. To some extent literature has the power to refute and/or reinforce our prejudice and bias. Literature is able to do this because it is able to open us to the different social and cultural standing around the world, we can always connect with literature, it comes in many forms and it’s composed of facts.

The Top Ten Tools are the essential key to critically analyzing literature. With these tools, including The Four Topos elements, The Three Matter of Facts, and The Three Appeals, literature can be broken down into segments allowing the reader to get a complete understanding of the purpose for that specific piece. Throughout the course, we have navigated through various essays that could all be examples of these top ten tools. However, certain essays better illustrate specific tools, which can be used as examples to define the true meaning of a literary tool. Pertaining to The Four Topos, the first literary tool of Definition can be defined as the displaying of the major idea of the essay.

Based on the Play ‘Trifles’ written by Susan Glaspell, the literary element that I would like to suggest is theme. Theme is used to convey the main idea of a story, novel, play or drama to create a better understanding of the readers about the story. In the Play ‘Trifles’, the themes that I found aregender differences and oppression of women.

Literature is an imitation of societal values and is thus a reflection of the human experience of a time period. Written works emphasize the elements of culture, by means of characters, particular events, setting and theme, specific to the time period in which it was composed. Furthermore, literature mirrors the troubles or hardships of society and projects the core values that define said society. Thus, as culture has changed over time, literature has remained a critical facet in representing time periods of the past. Essentially, the culture of a time period is manifested through writing in the projection of society’s values, symbolism of the center of community and literature itself.
