Irony is a useful device for giving stories many unexpected twists and turns. In Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour," irony is used as an effective literary device. Situational irony is used to show the reader that what is expected to happen sometimes doesn't. Dramatic irony is used to clue the reader in on something that is happening that the characters in the story do not know about. Irony is used throughout Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" through the use of situational irony and the use of dramatic irony.

Minny Jackson, whose one of the main characters, worked for Miss Walters. Miss Walters is Hilly’s mother who is exceedingly hoary, sick, as well as a little fanatical. Hilly has decided to put Miss Walters in a nursing home since of those reasons. Hilly then demands that Minny is to toil for her now, but Minny isn’t like most maids who keep their thoughts to themselves. So rather than agreeing like what a maid should perform, she declined Hilly’soffer. Hilly, obviously, wasn’t too fond of that decision. Mrs. Holbrook, being the villain that she is, decides to tell the whole town that Minny stole expensive silverware from her mother. Hilly did this as a result of wanting Minny to work for her in addition to not someone else.Miss. Hilly also figures her being rejected by a Negro will ruin her image, so she tosses morals out the window also puts Minny’s entire family unit in jeopardy. This lie about Minny means her reputation is soiled and won’t be able to find a job.In result, it’s impossible for her to provide for a 7 person family. Hilly is a self absorbed, obstinate woman that has no care for others.

The novel, “The Help”, by Kathryn Stockett, focuses on the social issue of segregation in the United States, specifically in the south. Stockett demonstrates the issue of racial segregation between blacks and whites in the 1960’s by applying allusions, and point of view.

“She’s got no goo on her face, her hair’s not sprayed, her nightgown’s like an old prairie dress. She takes a deep breath through her nose and I see it. I see the white-trash girl she was ten years ago. She was strong. She didn’t take no shit from nobody” (Kathryn 309). Minny would not allow anyone to give her any nonsense to put up with. She took it in as something she wants for herself which is strength. Especially with the tension with Hilly, Minny wanted to get revenge. She decided it was a good thing to talk about the pie she made for her that contained her feces for a book she volunteer to help out for someone. It was an opportunity to have a voice and let it all out. Minny had enough of the difficult obstacles that was being throwing at

The Help was an enjoyable book. The author’s writing allowed me to relate with the characters making it enjoyable. Although the book was generally good, the most outstanding flaw of the book was the dialect of the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to immerse themselves in history. It is hard to put down, and seems to be in line with historical facts.

When writing a story, the author always puts certain element into the story that will put one thing that represent story, these element helps create meaning and emotion in a story. These elements are call symbolism. Symbols are used to signify the theme of the story or the main idea.

Minny, every day when she wakes up, gives herself in her mind a pep talk that she has to tuck her anger and not be fooled by the racist actions of the white ladies "I tell myself, Tuch it in, Minny. Tuck in whatever might fly out my mouth…Look like a maid who does what she's told."(31) But as the events go by, she fails to do that and her sharpie mouth shoots at others. Most of Minny's painful angry thoughts and emotions come from Leroy, her husband, and his domestic battering abuse. Minny's spot for weakness is her husband; she cannot stand up to him.

Section 1 : The book, The Help, is a very well written novel so far. It is a novel about colored maids in the 1960’s and their struggles. In the beginning the book introduces the characters. First the main character, Aibileen, is introduced. She is a maid for Mrs. and Mr. Leefolt, as well as their daughter Mae Mobley.

Minny has a husband named Leroy, along with a family of five. Outside of her homelife, Minny was quite the strong lady, but when it came to arriving home to her husband, her character was flipped upside down. Leroy abused Minny. Around Leroy and his belittling acts, Minny would become rather weak and defenseless. She loved Leroy. She didn't want to do anything to put her at risk

In many novels, a good way to see how effective and meaningful a work is by how well the villain is created. In the book The Help, the villain is a woman named Hilly. Hilly is very crucial to making the book show its meaning of how harsh the time period was for African Americans and Civil Rights Activist. Hilly is a vindictive, selfish, and a racist woman. On the protagonist side, Abileen and Skeeter, are trying to find the truth and justice that is needed to address the Civil Rights issues. Whereas Hilly is trying to suppress their actions and allow herself to become more popular and powerful in society.

There were many literary devices used in this novel. For one, the use of different symbols- like the narrator’s grandfather for example- gave the novel more meaning and helped me as the readers better understand where his thought process was coming from. The novel also displayed different uses of allusions and showed me the correct to use them in my writing and how to identify them other novels. Another literary device would be irony. The Golden Day’s name was totally different from what it actually was. When the narrator went inside the Golden Day, I didn’t expect the atmosphere of the place to be as hectic as it was simply because of the name. There were also other uses of foreshadowing and hyperboles. I think the readers are able to learn

"The Cask of Amontillado" follows a narrator through his plot to get revenge on a man who has once insulted him. The man takes the idea of this revenge and lets it lead him into a string of actions that end with him killing the man named Fortunato. This revengeful action is the main event found throughout the story and it allows for the thought of revenge to drive this story and develop it. The topic of revenge is widely found throughout the story "The Cask of Amontillado" and the literary devices of irony, imagery, and the narrative point of view are used to develop this story's unsettling tone and its meaning as a whole.
