Film makers use many historical events to spark up and idea for a movie. One historical event that is commonly used is war. One advantage a film maker has when using war as a movie plot is that there is already a lot of drama in war. This may seem like a good advantage for the film maker, however focusing on all of the drama of war leaves much of the actual info. When watching a war movie, you may feel like you have an understanding about the war, but when you really compare a war movie to an actual war you find that there is a lot of factual information left out. I read the section about the battles that took place during WWII. It brought to my minds that in real life. There are more important things during a war than finding a private Ryan. War is a huge event and the little things like finding a person to keep the family name going is too small to include in war history. This is what separates the movies from the real life. Another difference is they don't show the actual planning it takes to start an attack or the inelegance that is needed to set up the perfect defense barrier to prevent the advancement of the enemy soldiers. A real battle can last days, weeks, months, or years, compared to movie war that lasts not even a day and has one guy or one platoon take on the entire other side. The casualties of real war is tremendous, rather than movies where you see almost the same characters in the whole movie accomplishing some of the most intense tasks with only one or two dying. Also, in movie war you don't see the other side's horror. You think all the opponents are bad horrible people that deserve to die, when they are just soldiers doing their job and the only reason we are fighting them is because of a bad leader or government. So in the movies every enemy deserves to die and should be shown no mercy, but the actual thing about that is that the enemy is just like any other soldier. There is one scene where the three flag raisers entered a crowded stadium before a football game which typified how an image of war can be so different to the reality of war. The flash photography, the cheering, the roar of the crowd all went to John Bradley’s head and he had flash backs of the fighting on Iwo Jima and the genuine heroes that he had left behind. This scene contrasts what the reality of war, were all the men are dug in and fighting for there life, and the images of war. Ira Hayes says “I know it’s a good thing, raising the money and that, ‘cause we need it. But, I can’t take them calling me a hero. All I did was try not to get shot. According to the author Tim O’Brien, people tend to readily accept the ‘facts’ presented of what happened during a war. People do not consider the existence of fallacies regarding the actual stories of what happens in wars, few consider that the ‘facts’ of an incident often change through people’s words. In the film, the soldiers fought very hard. They went through a lot in this war. They had to defend themselves and their territory. Often times they ran low on food and water. A ton of men died everyday when they were fighting. The soldiers had to deal with orders that were not necessarily smart orders. They had to protect themselves against Germany.
The opportunity to attend the Hollywood Semester is a huge stepping stone for me to achieving my dream and reaching my many goals. Academically I believe that this experience will exceedingly further and boost my knowledge and understanding of the industry and will help me assess what knowledge I need to gain before graduation. Professionally, The Hollywood Semester would help me gather more experience to make myself more distinguishable than other applicants after graduation. The internships that I am hoping to obtain will add valuable items to my resume along with allowing me to gain experience in a corporate studio setting. I am excited to participate in the creation of something far bigger than I have created here at Bradley University.
The order to bomb Constantinople shows that war is too real. Without a question the airmen are ordered to bomb Constantinople and can't be real to themselves but have to do it without thinking. But when one aviator is killed on the raid and the sergeant, realizing that he is next to die, decides to skip over the hill. The new aviator in place of the dead aviator is not much but a teen. While this was subtle this is another example of how real war is. The dead airmen is replaced by a young man with a full life ahead of him. I believe President Herbert Hoover said it best about just how real war is when he said that “Older men declare war. But it is youth that must fight and die.” This theme is apparent constantly because it is always next man up and each and every soldier knows that. This is real for the airmen. When the Sun was A God and With Fire and Sword are two films directed by Jerzy Hoffman, respectively in 2003 and 1999. The films were based on the historical events, illustrating the common matters of individuals’ desire to overpower others with wealth, power, and control in order to take over the throne and land. Both films took place in different settings – Piast dynasty era and Khmelnytsky Uprising era – but they do share some similarities and differences. The reason for why I chose these two films to compare and contrast was due to the fact that they share certain aspects that set the films alike and apart from one another. With this being said, if a filmmaker chose to pick a side and persuade the audience to believe in his side, he would have to give the audience facts and details. Some people do not agree with war, while some do. I feel that if a film shows the uncut, unedited, raw clips about war then it will bring both sides to a single unison conclusion.
