The Compare and Contrast of Two Historical Films
When the Sun was A God and With Fire and Sword are two films directed by Jerzy Hoffman, respectively in 2003 and 1999. The films were based on the historical events, illustrating the common matters of individuals’ desire to overpower others with wealth, power, and control in order to take over the throne and land. Both films took place in different settings – Piast dynasty era and Khmelnytsky Uprising era – but they do share some similarities and differences. The reason for why I chose these two films to compare and contrast was due to the fact that they share certain aspects that set the films alike and apart from one another. The aspects are: greed, friendship, loyalty, women, and love.
The first aspect that arose in these two films is greed. Greed was described fairly well in the films through Popiel and Bohdan Khmelnytsky. Although the characters were placed in different centuries, the films did not fail

Firstly, there was Dwiza, the main character of the film. She has the artless image as a woman, living up to the fact that she was given to God as a child and has a duty. Secondly, the other type of woman was Dwiza’s mother. Her mother was responsible in taking care of the things that went on at home and taking care of her children. She was a strict woman and was frequently at the aid of her husband. Lastly, there was Mila. Mila represented the image of an attractive woman. Her character was the type that appeals to men. In comparison with With Fire and Sword to When the Sun was A God, Princess Helena and her aunt shared similar features as Mila and Dwiza’s mother. Princess Helena was also an eye-catching woman, despite the fact that she was fragile. As for Princess Helena’s aunt, she was much stricter compare to Dwiza’s mother as she was the head of her
The original 1933 King Kong was created as a movie: to convey a story and entertain and audience. Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake took the foundation for King Kong and expanded upon it in almost every way in order to “make again” the amazement of the original for a modern audience. Audiences received the original King Kong very well. The stop motion sequences of Kong were amazing for their time and the movie grossed $90,000 in its opening weekend. In order to bank upon its success again sequels were made and then in 1976 a remake was made to improve upon the original. Paramount updated the movie to color, changed the story, and cast Jeff Bridges, a well-known actor of the time, as the lead. Although the movie received mixed reviews, it did
For many years Hollywood has been making blockbuster movies based on bestselling novels, but often these movies differ greatly from the novel . The movie The Power of One based on a book of the same name follows this trend. The Power of One tells the story of Peekay, a boy living in South Africa who dreams of becoming the welterweight champion of the world, and who tries to correct the injustice that goes on around him. Although the movie does keep the main themes of the novel like racism and how one person can change the world. The film adds new plot twists and characters that make the story more exciting, but also changes important characters and storylines from the
Both films tell a story of a father returning home after leaving to fight in the war, only to be discovered as imposters. However, both are set in entirely different eras, one in sixteenth century France and the other in eighteenth century Southern states of U.S.A. Knowing the back story of the characters, help the audience in forming a bond. with the imposters. Also, seeing their determination to help "their" village grow and become successful helps further that bond.
Joey Feek had a Christmas wish this year, and at least part of it came true. Joey had a wonderful, amazing Christmas with her family when many thought she would not make it. Joey has a battle with cancer where she has her good days and days so bad that she cannot get out of bed.
Gone with the Wind is one of my favorite love stories of all time. Margaret Mitchell wrote the beautiful story in 1928 and first published in 1936. The book is one of the best-selling novels to this date. Shortly after the book was published, it sold over one million copies within six months, as well as being awarded the Pulitzer Prize. The book immediately caught the eye of a young producer named David O. Selznick who immediately purchased the film rights for $50,000. The movie was just as big of a hit as the novel. Gone with the Wind won ten Academy Awards out of thirteen nominations. By today’s box office records, after adjusting for inflation, Gone with the Wind is still the most successful film in box office history. (IMdB) This
The play and film have certain aspects in common, for example they follow the same plot and they contain the same script. But there are of course some adjustments from the play to the movie. A funny fact is that the actors were the same in the movie as in the original production of the play. The big difference between the movie and the play is that the movie has taken more liberties concerning the stage directions and the setting of each scene of the play. When Adam and Jenny are on the park bench for example.
Based on Michael Punke’s 2002 semi-biographical novel entitled the same, The Revenant showcased the gritty and savage survival story of the 19th century fur-trapper, Hugh Glass, whose account of Ree Indian ambush, succeeding bear attack and subsequent survival became a revered legend in the United States of America. The motion picture not only succeeded in its attempt for a remarkable visual narrative, it also provided a substantial twist that remedied the missing emotional motivation in the historical Hugh Glass’ pursuit for revenge through the exploit of a fictive deep emotional attachment between Glass as notably portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio, his native Indian Pawnee wife and their mixed-race son, Hawk.
Many elements of the film Life is Beautiful can compare to the Bible. For example, Guido, the main character, acts as a Christ figure in that he saves his son, Joshua from the evils of the Holocaust. Another example that compares with the Bible is the tank that is promised to Joshua. Finally, Guido’s death eventually saves Joshua from his own death. Such examples in the movie are comparable to examples in the Bible.
Time period: The movie adaptation of the play takes place during World War II. It was an effective time period for the film to take place in because it was a time where many people were hungry for power, just like Macbeth is in Shakespeare’s original play. Dialogue: The movie uses Shakespearean language throughout the film. This helps maintain the original storyline. Despite the modern day twist on the story, the audience still gets the feeling of watching a Shakespeare play.
Films are not only made to entertain, but also discuss social issues surrounding the society. It serves as the mirror of the society in depicting its culture, traditions, and social conditions. It is interesting how films are used to show the viewers the different problems revolving around the country—whether it is about love, life, friendship, relationship, marriage, or aging. British films are using films to illustrate the problems and conditions of their society as they deal with male and female conflicts, social class, and marriage. Through the years, these issues are still discussed and explored in the films. The purpose of this paper is to compare two films
When I was watching the movie I saw some stuff that was not the same as the book was, therefore I will write the things that are different. The first one that I saw was that in the book Mary never went outside, but in the movie she was playing outside in the sand. The next thing was that Mary’s hair is lite bland in the book, but in the movie, it is lite brown. The next thing I saw was that she did not appear that she was sick in the movie, as in the book it said that she was even sicker. The next thing I saw was that Mary did not see her mom that much as in the movie she saw her mom and dad a decent amount. The next thing that happened was that Mary’s mom had an ivory elephant in the movie, but it did not saw in in the book that she had
Scream Factory’s double feature Blu-ray releases are a great way to enjoy two movies for a fraction of the price (unless you’re buying from Amazon Canada, in which case you pay double the price). Their latest double feature release is probably one of the better double features lately, giving us two highly enjoyable movies by the way of Destroyer and Edge of Sanity. The Blu-ray itself doesn’t feature any special features save for a trailer, but the movies entertainment values more than make up for any features that are lacking. With that being said, let’s continue on and see what the two films are all about…
After seeing three Chaplin films at this point in chronological order it is not hard to notice the extreme difference from the film “City Lights” to Chaplin’s earlier films “Mabel’s Predicament” and “The Pawnshop”. In terms of cinematography it is real easy to see the differences in these films. To begin the cinematography is different in that in the first two films most of the shots are wide shots and with very minimal cuts. Also the lengths of the first two films are very short “Mabel’s Predicament” is only 11 minutes long and “The Pawnshop” is 29 minutes long.
There is a movie made in 2002 called Windtalkers that was about the Navajo code talkers. This was the first time a lot of people had ever heard of the bravery and sacrifice of the American Indians during World War 2. Of course this is a Hollywood so liberties are taken for dramatic purposes but it served its purpose of exposing the masses to the invaluable contribution to the war effort. The government by this time had, had a long track record of horrible abuse to the American Indians, but that did not stop them from enlisted and making the same sacrifices as everyone else. Sadly the treatment of the American Indians would still be the same as far as the government was concerned. The treatment from the government and other soldiers as well as the contributions to the war effort became a turning point for both
