Persuasion has caused lots of us to rethink how they live and who they are. But what exactly is persuasion? Persuasion can be defined as the attempt to convince someone that something, that they may or may not believe, is true. When used correctly, persuasion can cause almost anyone to think or do anything. Many persuasive techniques can be used to make someone think the way you want them to, or do what you want them to do. Jonathan Edwards was preacher and writer. He gave many sermons to try and persuade others to think and do what he wanted them to. One of his most well-known written sermons is Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. He used the art of persuasion in this sermon to try and convince people to change their ways before the were cast into the burning pits of hell. Some of the persuasive techniques used by Jonathan Edwards in Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God were logical reasoning, emotional appeal, and imagery.

One who is posing an argument is a great deal more likely to persuade the audience if one has the proper authority. For example, if a driver is speeding down the freeway, that driver will be much more likely to pull over if there is a police car in pursuit, as opposed to an ice cream truck. Why will the speedster pull over for the police car? Because the policeman in the car has the proper authority and is able to uphold the law, unlike the ice cream truck driver. While one may be a well-researched scholar on the matter, it does not make a difference to the audience if one does not have the proper position.

I describe myself as a person who is willing to be persuaded. An example of persuasion is literature. The novel The Great Gatsby has influenced my perspectives of the American Dream, and how some circumstances can never truly change. The novel showed that the American Dream will never be fulfilled as long as society changes with it. The main character, Jay Gatsby, has achieved a ‘rags-to-riches’ miracle in order to impress the girl he is in love with: Daisy Buchanan.

There are many different techniques used to persuade individuals, the concepts I will focus on will be credibility and social attractiveness. The communicator I interviewed uses these concepts in his field of grassroots political activism. The idea of persuasion is something that has transitioned through the ages as a form of getting more support and other individuals on your side. Upon reading chapter 3 I now understand the different varieties of persuasion, when referring to writing. First of, the idea that a single topic can have a variety of different point of views or simply referring to the text as different angles of vision. When I think of different angles of vision it instantly transports me to the various audiences that an author could be trying to persuade. For example if I as a writer where trying to persuade individuals who care and worship the environment to believe in deforestation because of the numerous amount of benefits it could bring to others, they simply might not agree with me and it would be a long process to make them think otherwise. Also, The value of a photograph in a way reminds me of the saying “a picture is worth a thousand words”.

That’s an entirely different discussion, though. As I said above the key to persuasion is figuring out which lever to pull in order to get a person to alter their behavior in your favor. Typically this is associated with getting a person to view you favorably which increases the likely hood of them changing positions in your favor. Compliments, flirting, being helpful, being polite, giving attention and many other actions can be used to gain a favorable opinion. An example that springs to mind is the age-old cliché of a woman getting out of a traffic citation by batting her eyes and being flirty with a male officer.
