Cultural Diversity
To begin my personal informative essay on diversity in the United States, I would like to point out what information has had the most influence on how I better understand and relate to others different from how I did in the past. I do not feel as though this class taught me any more than I already know about other races and ethnicities, in terms of, how their ancestors came to America, or what hardships particular racial or ethnical groups have grown through in the group’s history in the United States. I think everything about diversity in America is a good thing. Let’s face it everything this country stands for is about diversity and freedom; America would not be what it is today if it were not for all those brave souls that chose to make a life risking decision and migrate to a new country for the promise of a better tomorrow. In my opinion, elementary schools should start concentrating more on this subject in order to teach and help break hateful family cycles of discrimination and prejudice. We can foster a climate of acceptance and pluralism in the United States by educating ourselves and sharing and demonstrating what we have learned with others, especially those closets in our lives like children. If enough of us would band together and consciously make changes in the upbringing of our kids, our family dynamics, and how we talk to and about others, than it may possibly spread throughout our society and have tremendous positive outcomes as a result. Another problem society has is how the media portrays certain groups and the negative effects it has on discrimination in America. For example, in many instances the only time many Americans receive information on racial groups like Muslims or Indian people is when one or a small group has commented an act of terrorism. Diversity a word often brings in the world of business and in the news. In certain cultural group, it is lip service to the public to alleviate those who have felt undermine by leaders of corporation and public official. On the other hand, immigrant has traveled to distant land for many centuries. Minority has seen prejudice based on personal ideas without any fact. In the United States and Canada, Multicultural groups do have opportunities that are available according to the law of the land, but businesses have the right to refuse within the purview of the local laws. Lastly, minority cultures sometimes feel unwelcome by the dominant culture. As a result, they have seen economic deficient and psychological scars from years oppression. The
Today we have many states that still have a ban on same sex marriage and the top news story of the past month has been about transgender bathroom rights. You would think that in this day and age these topics would be non-issues. Sadly though, they are examples of how people view differences today. Many people, for whatever reason, try to hold back from making change and see it as a negative thing. Due to this, I think that the first step when promoting diversity consciousness should be explaining how it is a positive thing and will benefit us in building a livelier future. I believe that if we continue to educate people on the benefits of diversity and encourage various diverse groups to stop avoiding change and work together we can start to embrace change. Then we can begin to see differences as an asset rather than a hindrance.

The negative aspects regarding diversity are generally based on religion, politics, ignorance, jingoism and tribalism. Even considering American exceptionalism, we are human. We tend to segregate ourselves with people of the same financial bracket, belief systems, heritage, and education and are biased even while claiming tolerance of others not
Diversity exists all across the United States. It is defined as the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary. Along with the ever-growing diversity in America, brings along intercultural communication. Intercultural communication can be defined as a situated communication between individuals or groups of different linguistic and cultural origins. Due to the limitless amounts of diversity and intercultural communication across the United States, misunderstandings and clashes between cultures are bound to occur. These clashes have been as extreme to be used to explain violence and crime not only in the United States, but also throughout our entire nation. On the other end, these cultural clashes can be so personal in our everyday lives because of our expectations of a certain behavior coming from our own cultural backgrounds, as many others have very different cultural backgrounds and expectations of us.
Diversity is common in America today, many people sharing a unique blend of many different collective cultural views on religion, politics, moral and ethical values. Conversely, an unsurpassed rich mixture of religions, races, and cultures, making it a wide-ranging synthesis that is unique to any other part of the world. Still, among the many religious cultures in America (secular, Christian, and other religions) Christianity still has much ground to cover with non-believers. Diversity is a very broad discussion today, it can range from race, gender, sexuality, political or religious views, or even mental disorders. In America, which is basically a melting pot of different cultures in itself seems to struggle with diversity in the one place it really shouldn’t, tv and movies. But how could the entertainment industry affect the way we view others? Simple, through representation. Representation is the act of showing off a particular group of people. Through this, the characters that belong to these groups, cultures or lifestyles act as representatives that show off how they interact with the world. Diversity is an ongoing discussion in day-to-day life. Not many situations occur without diversity having a role. There are a multitude of topics that introduces or involves diversity, to include age, sex, race, gender, ethnicity and so on. Prior to participating in this Diversity Awareness class, I’ve always thought diversity was more geared around discrimination and racism. Pick-up any school brochure and you will see the same picture on each one. A picture of students from different racial and cultural backgrounds standing together used to represent how diverse an institution is. The international school I work for is no different, the first picture on our website is of students from different cultures walking through the front doors of the school. Sprawled among the text below the school uses the words diversity, inclusion and acceptance liberally to describe itself. The school operates on the idea that since it’s populations consists of students from around the world, it is an accepting place that embraces its diversity. A view I once used to share before realizing that being diverse and supporting diversity are not the same thing. I grew-up in a small town in Ontario, where my classmates were white, middle class, cis-gendered, Christians. So when I started working at an international boarding school I felt like the school was exploding with diversity, with students from 73 different countries all living under one roof. However, I began to noticed that students only interacted with students from their own race or country, and the school has done little to help promote interaction. Once students and teachers are aware of cultural differences, they become aware of racism and can fight to eradiate it. Through their unbiased understanding of the differences between cultures and races, they are able to come to a point of acceptance of themselves and others. If you noticed in my previous paragraph, I mentioned the different types of diversity. Diversity emphasizes how different students and teachers are, but when explored in a classroom, can be used to reveal our similarities.
