Personal Action Plan for Diversity Consciousness
8 March 2015
Introduction
Diversity is an ongoing discussion in day-to-day life. Not many situations occur without diversity having a role. There are a multitude of topics that introduces or involves diversity, to include age, sex, race, gender, ethnicity and so on. Prior to participating in this Diversity Awareness class, I’ve always thought diversity was more geared around discrimination and racism. Through weekly readings and discussions, I have discovered that diversity is much broader than that. There are many countries that are mixed culturally

Prior to taking this course I thought I had a clear understanding of what it meant to have diversity awareness. I have been exposed to many different cultures both through my experiences in the Army and as a civilian, however I was not very aware of diversity. Since taking this course I have realized that increasing my awareness in diversity, would greatly benefit me as an Army soldier and as a future Law Enforcement Agent. As a soldier, I interact with different cultures, races, and sexes on a daily basis. I have developed a better sense of understanding in how other cultures may interact. As a future Law Enforcement, having a better sense of diversity awareness, would prevent me from becoming too stereotypical of other cultures. Throughout this course I have been introduced to diversity in a way I never would have imagined. I’m more cautious before casting judgment about the way I view people and the way people interact.
Two ways in which my “diversity understanding” has been affected by taking this class Understanding diversity is an important matter for us all to understand as a society to help promote a more generous world

The experience that I encountered with Tim Wise’s lecture will stick with me forever. Before this lecture I didn’t have any idea about how big of a problem diversity is and how people face it everyday. The example that he gave should me real life experiences that people face and made me open up my horizons on how diversity is experienced differently for everyone.
Diversity is to be accepted and respected. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognising our individual differences. These can be things such as: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs and political beliefs. It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich ways of diversity contained within each individual. For example, people living abroad in a different country telling people about their experience links to making a positive contribution. Also, children can celebrate their religion with their friends
In most of my classes the discussion of diversity and what it means to us as a future teacher is always a hot topic. So I’ve learned that diversity is so much more than just race and gender, it is every little thing that makes us, us, whether as an individual or as a group. So after completing Diversity Scale Survey (Miville-Guzman University Scale) and reading the following questions I have come to turns that I may not be so accepting of individual
Diversity Consciousness was offered to me as a science option for my Business Major. Based on the courses offered I believed that Diversity Consciousness would benefit not only my personal life but it would also benefit me in my career field as well. In my current field I am a leader in a large diverse organization and my expectations for the course was it would provide me with additional skills to become a more effective leader. Diversity Consciousness has expanded my scope and redefined for me what diversity means on a personal, social and global level.
Diversity has been observed in different parts of the world especially the Unites States. Seemingly the country harbors different variations of people. The people are living in the US vary in terms of their cultures, norms, beliefs, behaviors and religions. Such variations make them lead unique lives from one another. The clip ‘Diversity and inclusion- Love has no labels’ vividly recounts about the issue of variation and the challenges accompanying the people living in a diverse society. The US has different cultural groups such as the Latinos, Blacks, Whites, and other races. Marginalized groups find the challenge of failing to get equal opportunities in life as their counterparts. Education, employment, and
Cultural diversity, or multiculturalism, is based on the idea that cultural identities should not be discarded or ignored, but rather maintained and valued. The foundation of this belief is that every culture and race has made a substantial contribution to American history. However, many people remain opposed to the idea of multiculturalism, or cultural diversity awareness, while others often support it and yet have no clear idea of how it should be taught. The diversity of the United States is truly astounding, as many different ethnic and racial groups have contributed to the social,
Promoting and enhancing diversity is important in a society. People are giving birth constantly; Hispanics, African-Americans, Whites, and so on. This shows us the growth of diversity in the United States likewise it is predicting the future.
The world is more diverse today than any other time in human history, we now have the ability as species to take a twenty hour flight almost anywhere on the planet. With our new-found way of experiencing the world we are able to adopt different cultural values, concepts and Ideas. Development of diversity in society is present everyday. Currently media is bringing to light many issues not addressed since the culmination of this country. In the United States any citizen has access
Growing up as a minority in a close-knit small town with people of various other cultures around the world, diversity is a topic I am accustomed to. However, in the entirety of my eighteen years on this earth, I had never attended a university-level diversity lecture. Dr. Mindy West’s faculty lecture on Friday the twenty eighth of October at three in the afternoon, in the BAC building was my first university-level lecture on diversity. Dr. West’s lecture on diversity to the half-full room of anxious business students shocked and astonished me on multiple different levels.
Race is a part of our culture that shapes who we are as a society. Race helps us make up how one sees the world around us and the different multitudes of ethnic groups. Different raciest are compassed by how we view one’s languages, values, and beliefs, “race that continues to shape the practice and politics of citizenship in ways that are often obscured in modern citizenship debates” (Collins issues”. 2014) causing for racial diversity, the “importance of making diversity evident at every level of the organization, showing respect for diversity (Luttrell.2014) groups.
Diversity is an important and beautiful concept in our society and this essay will prove why. Reasons to support this are it makes each individual life worthwhile, it helps us evolve and become better and it can build closer relationships.
Diversity is normally thought of on the surface level. The general population usually takes into account physical/demographic characteristics as indicators of diversity. People tend to focus on aspects like gender or skin color, which limits and narrows the definition of diversity. This causes neglecting to include other external dimensions like recreational habits, educational background, etc. In the book, diversity is examined by various scholars, all of whom perceive its definition in different ways. This class has taught me that diversity is an expansive topic and our class presentations gave me the opportunity to examine a specific area of it. Each presentation offered greater insight into the perspectives of individuals that
Diversity is what unites people, without diversity, society would be like a dystopian society; same people, same cycle, same routine, going on and on. With diversity we have a wide range of options, different people; you’re able to understand how other live. For a while, I didn’t understand what diversity meant, why people traveled. But when I was able to travel to Nigeria and understand the culture, I fully understood. Through the Cultural Fair, Let the Nations Rejoice, and my stay in Nigeria, I now fully understand the importance of diversity, and the need for my fellow peers to be educated about the importance of
Cultural diversity has been increasing at a soaring rate over the course of time. Diversity continues to be more common in today’s society compared to past history. This may be a result of many factors such as immigration. Diversity can be defined but not limited to as the race, gender, or background a person belongs to that differs from the majority culture. A person’s background helps identify themselves as well shape their ideology. Different people have different notions about those who are different from them. Depending on a person’s perception on others can affect how well a person collaborates and interacts with others of different beliefs. A prime example of diversity can be perceived in schools. Today schools are more divergent
