Structures And Style Enhance Theme

Once you begin a book, you’re thrown into a story. As you read you begin to see the true meaning of the book. You see the theme. Character development shows you how the character progressed throughout the story and changed to enhances the theme. Plot events show the character’s reaction to an event to enhance the theme. Setting puts the character in a place that they have to adapt to, which helps bring out the theme. Although each book has its very own unique theme, all authors use character development, plot events, and setting to express the theme. He grew more violent and aggressive. Character development is the change and growth of the character. Character development affects the theme by showing the growth of the character for the better or the worse. One example is “He had been suddenly jerked from the heart of civilization and flung into the heart of things primordial” (London 13). This quote from Call of the Wild by Jack London shows the theme of primitivity. Buck had a violent shift from civilized life to primitive life. He couldn’t sleep all day anymore. He now had to fight for survival. Another example is “They were The Wave now and Ben realized they could act on their own without him if they wanted. The thought could have been frightening, but Ben was confident that he had control as their leader” (Strasser 62). This quote from The Wave shows the theme of power. Buck was the exception. He alone endured and prospered, matching the husky in strength, savagery, and cunning. Then he was a masterful dog, and what made him dangerous was the fact that the club of the man in the red sweater had knocked all blind pluck and rashness out of his desire for mastery. Buck has endured what nature has thrown at him. He will fight for survival until he has no more fight left in him. His transition from being domesticated to fending for himself, had brought out the dormant instincts in him. There he'd been, denying The Wave could hurt anyone, and at the same time he'd hurt Laurie, his own girlfriend, in the name of The Wave” (Strasser). This quote from The Wave shows the theme of power.
