Communication is simply the act of transferring and receiving information from one person to another. We communicate for a variety of reasons such as to share information, to comment, to give instructions and to share opinions. Effective communication involves a two way process in which each person tries to understand the view point of the other person. Moreover, communication is a cycle because when two people communicate they need to check that their ideas have been understood. Good communication involves the process of checking, understanding, using reflection and active listening. Effective communication is highly important for the health and social care sector. If professionals use effective communication then it could help them to focus on fulfilling the needs of service users. There are several theories of communication that can be applied to a health and social care environment.In this assignment we will explore two theories of communication in health and social care.
Firstly, we will discuss Argyle (1972) communication cycle. The Communication Cycle is a six-step process that helps you develop and refine your message. Argyle (1972) argued that the interpersonal communication was a skill that could be learnt and developed in the same way a person could learn to drive a car. According to Argyle skilled interpersonal interaction involves a cycle in which you have to translate what other people are communicating and adapt your own behaviour to communicate effectively.
In this essay I will be explaining how I use good communication and interpersonal interactions with the residents I will meet on my work experience at a residential home for older people. I will be explaining the skills and strategies I will use to make communication making sure it is effective. My essay will talk about different types of communication for example one to one, with different types of people, including professionals and service users. It also shows staff are aware of the current needs of the client.
The Argyle’s communication cycle theory is process commonly used in the health and social care sector to explain how communication can be effective, this is a theory in which can enable a person to understand what is being said or wrote, and to be able to respond to the conversation appropriately. A man named Michael Argyle who was a social psychologist that researched human communication and discussions between people created the Argyle theory in 1972. He believed that interpersonal communication between individuals was like learning how to drive a car. Argyle first explained that human communication is a process that involves people sending and responding to messages in a non-verbal and verbal way. In 1972 Argyle created the ‘communication cycle’ and the aim of the communication cycle is for people to understand how communication occurs between them when they are one to one. The cycle is made up of six main steps and the steps involve, being able to understand and observe how people communicate. It is also about being able to reflect and listen to what the person is saying so that we understand and are able to respond to it correctly.
Communication is usually taken for granted in our every day to day living as we use it without thought. Good communication skills are needed in the workplace and especially with nursing staff to and from patients when giving first hand care. Good or bad communication can make there experience within the health care setting a positive or negative one and can leave a lasting impression. A good health care provider can use there communication skills to put a patient at ease with a few comforting words or gestures, a lack of positive communication in the health care setting could leave the patient feeling neglected, ignored and not valued as a patient.

So, effective communication has to involve effort from both participators (both the sender as well as the receiver) in the communication.

It is important to understand the true meaning and emotion behind the expressed information, and this can often become quite difficult when the subjectivity and complexity of nonverbal cues gets thrown into the mix. Throughout this paper, the meaning of communication and its application to group and team functioning will be explored, as well as the powerful impact it has in the health care setting. Effective communication amongst members of the health care team promotes teamwork and possessing an experienced and competent set of communication skills as a nurse is absolutely critical in providing safe, therapeutic and reliable care to patients.
