Argyle Communication Cycle

In this essay I will be explaining how I use good communication and interpersonal interactions with the residents I will meet on my work experience at a residential home for older people. I will be explaining the skills and strategies I will use to make communication making sure it is effective. My essay will talk about different types of communication for example one to one, with different types of people, including professionals and service users. I will use communication with a variety of people and consider the most appropriate form of communication to be applied making sure the needs of all individuals are met. The different reason people communicate is to show pain, anger, joy, love etc. It is important for people communicate so their views, wishes and information gets across. The communication could be formal or informal. Documentation and record keeping is important in the social care sector as this information may be used for legal reasons. All communications is confidential and are on a “need to know” basis. Communication between colleagues and other healthcare professionals is essential, as it ensures continuity of care. It also shows staff are aware of the current needs of the client.

The Argyle’s communication cycle theory is process commonly used in the health and social care sector to explain how communication can be effective, this is a theory in which can enable a person to understand what is being said or wrote, and to be able to respond to the conversation appropriately. This theory has six stages and these include;

A man named Michael Argyle who was a social psychologist that researched human communication and discussions between people created the Argyle theory in 1972. He believed that interpersonal communication between individuals was like learning how to drive a car. Argyle first explained that human communication is a process that involves people sending and responding to messages in a non-verbal and verbal way. In 1972 Argyle created the ‘communication cycle’ and the aim of the communication cycle is for people to understand how communication occurs between them when they are one to one. The cycle is made up of six main steps and the steps involve, being able to understand and observe how people communicate. It is also about being able to reflect and listen to what the person is saying so that we understand and are able to respond to it correctly.

Communication is usually taken for granted in our every day to day living as we use it without thought. Good communication skills are needed in the workplace and especially with nursing staff to and from patients when giving first hand care. Good or bad communication can make there experience within the health care setting a positive or negative one and can leave a lasting impression. A good health care provider can use there communication skills to put a patient at ease with a few comforting words or gestures, a lack of positive communication in the health care setting could leave the patient feeling neglected, ignored and not valued as a patient.

The communication cycle is a commonly used theory of communication. It was first developed by Charles Berner in 1965; it was then modified by Michael Argyle, who was a social psychologist, in 1972. The concept of a ‘communication cycle’ makes it clear that, in order to have effective communication, it must be a two way process. As well as transferring messages to others in a definite, clear way, health care professionals must be able to respond to the verbal feedback as well as the non-verbal feedback. So, effective communication has to involve effort from both participators (both the sender as well as the receiver) in the communication.

Michael Argyle is a social psychologist who developed theories about interpersonal interaction and human communication. He carried out experimental theories of non-verbal and verbal communication to develop and test he’s theoretical ideas. He has a communication cycle which explains and predicts how communication can occur in a one to one situation.

This assignment will start by discussing two well-known theories known as ‘the cycle of communication’ by Michael Argyle and ‘the stages of communication’ by Bruce Tuckman. Firstly, it will look at Michael Argyle’s ‘The cycle of communication’.

In this assignment, I am going to explain a number of these strategies aimed at improving the quality of communication in health and social care settings.

There are many differing ideas on the best way to communicate in health and social care and there are many strategies used by the many differing professionals working in health and social care. This assignment will review the different strategies used and then will evaluate the differing strategies and their effectiveness when overcoming barriers to effective communication and interpersonal interactions.

Communication is the sharing of ideas, thoughts and information between or among individuals. The way we communicate varies greatly among cultures throughout the world and has an extremely powerful impact within group and team environments. Effective communication enables us to engage in enriching social interaction with others, and allows for the creation of environments where group and team functioning can flourish. As simple as communication may seem, much of what we express to others has the tendency of getting misunderstood, therefore acquiring a skilled set of communication skills is crucial to the overall success of a team and group. Effective communication is more than simply sharing information. It is important to understand the true meaning and emotion behind the expressed information, and this can often become quite difficult when the subjectivity and complexity of nonverbal cues gets thrown into the mix. Throughout this paper, the meaning of communication and its application to group and team functioning will be explored, as well as the powerful impact it has in the health care setting. Effective communication amongst members of the health care team promotes teamwork and possessing an experienced and competent set of communication skills as a nurse is absolutely critical in providing safe, therapeutic and reliable care to patients.
