Recommendation

After researching and evaluating these two choices, I have determined that the Dell OptiPlex 9030 is the ideal option for Pennsylvania State University Mont Alto. I have included a decision matrix, as shown as Table 1 below, that visually displays how I determined the OptiPlex 9030’s superiority. The methodology behind Table 1 is explained within the Decision Matrix sub-section. Lastly, I will conclude this section and the report with my Decision and Reasoning sub-section.

Decision Matrix

First I broke down the criteria in this report and assigned weights. The weights determine which level of importance each criterion had. The higher weight figure was, the more important that aspect was. After the weights were determined, …show more content…

This is why the 9030 receives twice the score of the 9020. According to Mark Knapp, lead PC reviewer on cheatsheet.com, “The RAM in a computer can affect just how much multitasking can go on and how fast it will be.” Basically the more RAM available allows the PC to run more and more programs simultaneously. This benefit becomes essential for a college student or staff member that may have to juggle 2-3 Microsoft Office programs, an internet explorer window with twelve open tabs, and an interactive laboratory program like DataStudio without sluggish PC performance. Another major contributor to PC performance is the processor. The 9030’s Intel i7 is the latest Intel processor on the market. According to Joel Domingo, lead desktop analyst for PC Magazine, “the Core i7 processors have more capabilities than the Core i5 CPUs. They will be better for multitasking, multimedia tasks, high-end gaming, and scientific work” (Domingo, 2015c). PSUMA placed PC performance as a second level priority, or a weight of three in Table 1. The 9030’s performance scores were considerably higher than the 9020s in Table 1. Since PSUMA is also a center for academic research in areas such as natural sciences, computing sciences and various forms of engineering, the 9030’s level of computing power would prove to be a valuable …show more content…

PSUMA considers the installation timelines to be just as important as costs. This can be seen from the data in Table1. Project timeline criterion was given a weight of 4. The overall 9020 project would take ten days to complete, at ten hours per day. The 9030 only takes 7 days to complete, at ten hours a day. Completing the project as quickly as possible is another way the university can reach out to student and staff morale. As previously discussed the students and staff have complained about dysfunctional PCs and wasting of student funds. Choosing the 9030 allows the campus to get those new PC assets installed quickly, providing the new computing power to combat negative opinions in that category as well as save $1620.00 in student funds that would pay for excess labor in the 9020’s
