LEADERSHIP 2 Too often, leaders and their followers who are working toward meaningful change and common goals equate leadership with a power dynamic based on a hierarchy of authority. The importance of leaders is still felt in many fields, including war, politics, business, and management. Without a doubt, there are as many varieties of leaders as there are theories and heuristics for leading. Organizational leadership varies from one company to the next, with some offering the same model as others while others, depending on their primary focus and function, adopting a unique approach. With this perspective on leadership, the most pressing issue is determining how to foster future peak leaders and what sets apart average leaders from those who go on to become superstars. Leadership expert and American author John Maxwell claims that the key is found in his book, The 5 Levels of Leadership. The main purpose of this analysis is to analyze the theories, methods, and characteristics of leadership that John Maxwell describes in his book. In addition, this article will examine John Maxwell's professional commitment to leadership. In addition, the analysis will go over both the strengths and weaknesses of John Maxwell as a leader that readers may learn from. The central idea of John Maxwell's The 5 Levels of Leadership is that there are five distinct tiers of leadership. The first refers to rank or status, and the second to authorization or connection (Maxwell, 2013). Third is doing something and getting something out of it, fourth is growing and reproducing human beings, and fifth is reaching the peak (Maxwell, 2013). According to John Maxwell, progressing through the stages becomes progressively more challenging and time-consuming as one goes along. However, once attained, each higher tier of leadership provides a morally satisfying position in one's life. John Maxwell also delineates the core characteristics of effective leadership. He simplifies the process of rising through the ranks of leadership, helping readers understand the factors at play in whether an individual is
LEADERSHIP 3 promoted. After reading this book, you will have a better understanding of what it takes to be a great leader. One's position or title is irrelevant to one's ability to lead, which is a lesson I had to learn the hard way. While being appointed to a position or given a title is the first step toward becoming a leader, it is also the most basic. One must develop the capacity to inspire and build teams that produce not only outcomes but also future leaders if they want to become a superstar leader with influence over followers (Maxwell, 2013). A combination of John Maxwell's guidance, hard work, and a hunger to learn, he claims, is all it takes to ascend to a higher and more prestigious level of leadership. John Maxwell is not an unfamiliar name when discussing leadership. He is an outstanding leader and one of the most influential minds in the field of management today. John Maxwell's demonstrated genuine readiness and true commitment to leading others and achieving a common vision and objective through positive influence have led many to recognize him as one of the world's finest leaders and management experts. The urge to make a difference in people's lives has been with John Maxwell ever since he was a young man, around fifty years ago. He was an advocate of leadership that cared about and served the people. He first discovered that true leadership required him to work on himself and build relationships with others while serving as pastor of a tiny church in Ohio (The John Maxwell Co., 2017). It was not a smooth ride, and he has worn several hats since those early days, he says. His goal has always been to have a global impact and to improve people's lives one at a time, and he is still working toward that goal today. Even now, he is driven by a desire to help people achieve their full potential (The John Maxwell Co., 2017). Given that John Maxwell has made it his life's work to assist others in realizing their own worth and potential, there is no better leadership style to use to characterize him than "vocational leadership." Being a leader is a calling for him.
