Question
The topic that I chose is how the COVID 19 pandemic affected mental health. Before COVID 19, mental health was not discussed as often as they are now and were not considered a global health issue. In many countries, mental health was mental health disorders were not considered to be part of healthcare because it was there was little funding (Lucero-Prisno III). Since the pandemic, mental health issues have risen post-pandemic. WHO world mental health report says that the pandemic triggered a 25% increase in anxiety and depression. COVID 19 has also affected the healthcare systems across high, middle, and low income countries (Lucero-Prisno III). There has been an increase in anxiety and depression specially for people who have experienced job loss and a common one is feelings of loneliness. It has also been reported that 50% of young adults ages 18-24 reported having anxiety and depression and our more likely than older adults to experience mental health symptoms (Panchal).  In one of the articles I found, it showed that a study that was done of adults ages 18-65+ as well as gender and reported if these adults had symptoms of anxiety and/or depressive disorder through a health questionnaire. It was reported that overall, 32.3% of adults had anxiety and/or depression. And the age that experienced the most anxiety and depression were adults between the ages 18-24. The data also showed that more females reported to have anxiety and depression (36%) compared to males (28.3%) (Panchal). According to the National Institutes of Health, there are certain groups of people who are more affected than others. People who are more likely to experience of mental illness or mental disorders are people from racial and ethnic minority groups, pregnant woman and people who face financial housing insecurity (National Institute of Health). In an article back in 2020, it discusses the covid 19 disparities in New York. The article explained that the fatality rate of covid cases per 100,000 was 24.9%, 55.4 percent in Asian ethnicities, 91.3% for Hispanics and 102.9% in Africans Americans (Primary Care and Developments Corporation). Since I mentioned previously that mental health is not as well funded as other types of disorders/ diseases so I think that if the government could put more funding health I feel like a lot more people will have the access and treatment they need. I think that the One of the articles that i found explains that almost half of the U.S. population living in a mental health workforce shortage area. The article also explains that there is a lack of diverse mental health care workforce could contribute to the limited health treatment among people of color (Panchal). That's why I think that if mental health was funded more and everyone should be able to have access to mental health resources and treatments.  What’s your respond to this?
