We enphasized that the Bohr Planetary Model along with the Balmer equation provides precisely correct answers only for hydrogen and other elements, such as Li+2, with only a single electron.  In a single sentence, identify a property in a multi-electron atom that may be responsible for the failure of the Balmer equation to correctly predict the energy of electrons.

Question

 We enphasized that the Bohr Planetary Model along with the Balmer equation provides precisely correct answers only for hydrogen and other elements, such as Li+2, with only a single electron.  In a single sentence, identify a property in a multi-electron atom that may be responsible for the failure of the Balmer equation to correctly predict the energy of electrons.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The Balmer equation for hydrogen and hydrogen like elements is

1λ=R12-1n2

Here, n can be 3, 4, 5..

For hydrogen (with Z=1) and hydrogen like elements (Z>1), electrons (negatively charge) revolves around the nucleus (positively charged). When an electron tries to jump from one level to other energy is either absorbed or emitted. The electrons are permitted only to certain orbits and can increase the orbit as n2. Here, n is principal quantum number.

The transition involved is from 3 to 2, then the series of transition will be Balmer series.

Thus, for lighter elements there are no such correlation effects that are observed.
