Classify each solvent as protic or aprotic.
A solvent can be categorised on the basis of polarity of the bond. If it has a polar bond, that is, H attached to the most electronegative atom, it will be a polar solvent. If it does not have H attached to the electronegative atom, it will be a non-polar solvent.
The polar solvent will be a protic solvent as it will have H attached to highly electronegative atom and will donate its proton easily because electronegative atoms has the tendency to withdraw electron density towards itself. However, the non protic solvent will not donate its hydrogen as it is not attached to highly electronegative atom.
a) Since it has hydroxyl group which contains hydrogen attached to the highly electronegative atom, that is, oxygen. It will be a protic solvent.
