A great wave of industrial growth spread across the Western
world at the end of the nineteenth century. When inventors
figured out how to mass-produce steel relatively cheaply, tall
buildings rose toward the sky, mighty bridges spanned great
rivers, and factories sprouted up. An ever-growing number of
powerful machines used the newly harnessed power of
electricity and petroleum to transport people and churn out
mass-produced goods. People poured into cities to work long
hours for low wages in dangerous, dirty, dark factories. Many
workers were forced to live in miserable, overcrowded
conditions.
