Briefly explain the term diabetes insipidus.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The kidneys are the major organ that forms the excretory system in the body. They regulate the fluid volume in the body. Thirst is a phenomenon which regulates the fluid intake in the body. Most of the fluid is excreted from the body in the form of urine, however some amount is lost by sweating and breathing.

Step 2

Vasopressin is a hormone produced by the hypothalamus, that is at the base of the brain. This hormone is stored in the pituitary gland. When the fluid volume in the body decreases, the pituitary gland releases vasopressin that signals the kidneys to absorb more fluid. More fluid volume in the body causes less or no release of the hormone, thus the fluid is excreted out of the body. The urine passes into the urinary bladder and is released via the urethra.
