The contributes to the purpose of the story due to its exaggeration on the racism factor the Author is trying to push. Characterization and Plot Elements are present.

Over and over again the author makes it evident racism is an outrage in the era this story is taken place. This quote is a vivid example of that; Rosaleen encounters racist men and get aggravated. Immediately after Lily arrives to the Boatwright house it is hinted that the group of relatable girls would be very close; overtime they become a family. Lily’s character develops dramatically at this point, she finally stands up to her father and speaks about her emotions. Conflict also develops as the story comes to an end, Lily solves the conflict of T.Ray’s obsessive abuse; he leaves her at the Boatwright house. 3.

This is represented when Lily generates a relationship with Rosaleen and the Boatwright sisters that she never signified with her father, “We all came together and hugged, it was like they were family.” Personally, I feel very enthusiastic and connected to this moral; after reading and imagining the pain and sorrow Lily went through with her father and the connection she made with the Boatwright sister; family isn't just by blood. I've had many occurrences where i have called groups of friends or relatives my second family and I mean it; Yes, it may not be as drastic as Lily’s situation but I still understand what she feels. Character wise, Lily spoke the most to me due to her dramatic development throughout the story. At the beginning she was a scared and vulnerable kid with little to none knowledge about the world; at the end Lily becomes a whole other person, she’s independent, proud, and strong. (“‘DAD I'M NOT A KID ANYMORE’”) A Belief i felt influenced me is how Rosaleen sticks to her moral rights has a human being no matter what; she won't take racism from anyone.
