Children involved in a team atmosphere develop traits to be a good leader, a good teammate, and key characteristics of a beneficial member of society. Each of these aspects correlate to advantages in the professional world. Being a part of a team is applicable in the work force and will benefit the child to understand the importance of collaborating with others and fulfilling duties of a job. Sports also teach honorable qualities for successful citizens including, respect, discipline, and trust. In order to develop these social skills and other skills needed later in life, improve academics, and combat the rising number of obese or inactive children, they should be allowed to play sports. According to researchers at Michigan State University's Institute, Children that are physically active perform better in school, have better attendance, and improved behavior in academic settings. Physically active children exhibit an array of benefits in schools such as forty percent higher test scores and fifteen percent more likely to go to college. Youth sports that truly benefit young athletes should be structured to emphasize participation more than just competition. Children enjoy a sport more when they are able to have fun (Humpries). Despite many excesses some sport programs still manage to promote important virtues like self- confidence, teamwork, personal responsibility, coping skills, and persistence. Through sports kids can learn to stay organized and learn how to prioritize (Ferguson). Sports enables development of physical skills and increasing proficiency makes kids feel good about themselves. It teaches kids that failure is something to overcome and and not to fear (Meyerhoff 8-9). 6th graders should be allowed to participate in school sports just as 7th and 8th graders. Reasons we should participate in school sports are, kids can get even more fit and strong than just being in gym, another one is people can challenge each other in competitions, my final one is that children can be incredibly better along with teamwork and leadership. By now almost everyone has heard about child obesity in America, but just how high are the rates? The answer might surprise you. According to Nate Whitman, a writer for The Huffington Post, “rates of obesity have doubled in 2- to 5-year-olds, quadrupled in 6- to 11-year-olds, and tripled in 12- to 19-year-olds” (par. 2). This is due to more children staying inside and only doing activities such as video games. They do not interact with anyone besides whomever they are talking to online.
