You’ve heard of the Titanic’s sinking, right? Well, do you know who is exactly is responsible though? The captain of the R.M.S. Titanic is to blame, which was Captain Edward J. Smith and he was a popular leader. He had a total of 38 years of working with the White Star Line, the company that owned the Titanic. Captain Smith should have had full control of the ship and obviously, that night, he did not. Therefore, Captain Smith is the the person to blame for the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic because he cancelled a lifeboat drill on the Titanic, he allowed lifeboats to leave partially full and not at the correct time, and lastly, he ignored seven different iceberg warnings. Captain Smith cancelled a lifeboat drill on the Titanic for unspecified reason. That drill could have prepared all of the passengers and crew for the collision. Rebecca Gutteridge states, “He[Captain Smith] also cancelled Titanic’s lifeboats drill, which could have …show more content…
Robert Ballard states, “But water was pouring into the first five compartments. And when the water filled the,, it would spill over into the next compartment.” However, Captain Smith was a long-time sailor and was very good at what he did and should have been able to handle the Titanic's flaws. Robert Ballard also states, “Most important, after thirty-eight years’ service with the White Star Line, he had an excellent safety record. At the age of fifty-nine, Captain Smith was going to retire after this last trip, a perfect final tribute to a long successful career.” Captain Smith is to blame for the sinking of the Titanic because Smith Cancelled a lifeboat drill, allowed lifeboats to leave partially full, and ignored several iceberg warnings. Now that you now know why Captain Smith is responsible for the sinking of the Titanic, do you
Have you ever wondered who sank the Titanic? Captain Smith was responsible for the sinking of the Titanic because he put the ship in full speed, he was ignoring the ice warnings, and there were no warnings for the people at the iceberg sighting.
And still does happen because it is now a law. It is called the captains law and the law is that the captain must be the last person alive on the ship before it sinks. Captain of the ship, Edward Smith, sank with the titanic. It has been said that the captains law is if the ship is sinking then the captain of the ship must save everyone on the ship or die trying. That is exactly what captain Edward Smith did on the titanic. He is very known for staying with the ship while it sank. His actions inspired me to be brave and
The movie Titanic, based on personal stories from the ship’s passengers, expresses the importance of safety precautions and the division of class as well as spreading awareness of the issue. The ship set sail in April of 1912 from Southampton in United Kingdom to New York City. When it sank, about 1,500 people died. Though the main characters in the movie were fictional, there were five characters that were based off of real people who were on the ship. Margaret Brown, Archibald Gracie, Captain Edward John Smith, Thomas Andrews and Joseph Bruce Ismay were those five. The captain of the ship was Edward John Smith, and his personal story is shown throughout the movie. Smiths’ attempts to save lives were not
In my opinion, if the captain would have listened to the warnings instead of placing the piece of paper in his coat pocket, they might have been able to change course again for a little while until they passed the ice and survived. A couple days before they left England, Captain Smith decided to alter slightly his route because of the many iceberg warnings that he received. The entire day of April 14, 1912 (the day of the sinking), Captain Smith was still receiving iceberg warnings from the other ships around her. They were all saying the same thing: the route he switched to had large amounts of ice floating about. Ignorantly, the Captain did not heed their warnings very well and did not re change it. He did, however, tell the watchmen to tell him if they saw anything ahead of them that could be potentially dangerous.
There were only enough lifeboats for half of the passengers and were not filled to captivity when
Have you ever wondered who sank the Titanic ? I feel that the history of the Titanic is important because all of the people on the Titanic would either die or they would live and it was their decision. I care about all of the people that were on the Titanic and passed away and I think you should care about them too. I suppose that Captain Smith was responsible for the sinking of the Titanic because he ignored the 7 iceberg warnings, he also didn’t slow down the ship and he didn’t fill up the lifeboats completely. Here are some reason why I consider that Captain Smith sank the Titanic.
“We could see groups of the almost fifteen hundred people still aboard, clinging in clusters or bunches, like swarming bees; only to fall in masses, pairs or singly, as the great after part of the ship, two-hundred and fifty feet of it rose into the sky, till it reached a sixty-five or seventy degree angle.” – John Thayer (www.eyewitnesshistory.com). The RMS Titanic, more commonly known as “The Titanic”, set sail across the Atlantic Ocean April 10, 1912 from Southampton, England to New York City, USA. The “unsinkable” Titanic was a luxury boat, with mostly first class seats. It was the most high class boat of its time with nothing but positive reviews from wealthy businesses. The sinking of the Titanic is proof that
There were many causes to the Titanic sinking. However, one of these causes is more to blame than the rest. His name was Jack, Jack Phillips. He is most to blame for the sinking of the Titanic, because, he ignored seven iceberg warnings, told the Californian operator, shut up, and sent the “CQD” signal after the iceberg was hit.
Who do you believe is responsible for the 1,500 lives lost in the sinking of the Titanic? The Titanic is a ship that can hold up to 3,547 passengers and they only had 20 lifeboats aboard. Edward John Smith was the Captain of the ship that was sailing to America from South Hampton . Edward John Smith was responsible for the lives lost on April 15,1912. Edward lost all of those lives.
Captain Smith ordered the lifeboats to be uncovered at 12:05 am and sending calls at 12:10 am. Passengers were tired and didn’t get into the first lifeboat until 12:45 am. Soon it became obvious that the ship was sinking and many fought for their lives to get on a boat. The water first filled the boiler rooms and no passenger rooms. The boat then lifted up and broke and lifted up into two pieces, the top half pointing to the sky. Passengers got many injuries from running around in panic in fear of their lives. Some people even threw furniture overboard and would jump in after it, hoping it would float. After saying their goodbyes, men watched as the wives and kids were boarded onto the lifeboats. Some stepped of the lifeboats to let others sit and mad no effort to save themselves, they later went to an honored grave. . However it became obvious that many could not fit and find safety on a boat. The remaining passengers and crew were given life jackets, but life expectancy would be slim when they were exposed to icy cold waters 4 degrees below zero. As they jumped in they quickly died in the water from a heart attack or slowly developed symptoms of hypothermia. After the ship was slowly sinking the search for survivors began, using lifeboats they passed through the frozen people. Survivors were finally rescued around 4:00 am on April 15 by the ship Carpathia. The ship steamed through the night at high speed and considerable risk. The ship rescued 705 people, leaving 1,522 passengers had died along with the
The Titanic started its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912 nevertheless sadly sunk four days later. There were several events that could have saved the Titanic from sinking. One of the reasons could be that the operator wasn’t paying attention to any of the warnings he had received from another ship named “Californian” in response to their warnings busy and annoyed with all the calls about the iceberg he responded back with “shut up! shut up!” Another is maybe that captain smith wasn’t paying attention to the icebergs ahead. Or it could be that the Titanic was going 26 mph heading straight towards the icebergs. It could have been any of those reasons or perhaps it could have been that the hull wasn’t hard enough. All of these reasons could have helped with the sinking of the Titanic.
The Titanic sunk because of one person and that person is Captain Smith. Smith basically killed 1,503 people when there was enough life jackets for all 2,208 people. In the morning 300 more people were pulled out of the sea.Captain smith is the one that is responsible for the sinking of the Titanic because he ignored calls for help, ignored the ice warnings, and he was sleeping on the job.
The causes of the titanic sinking are unbelievable. One of the reasons the titanic did not stay afloat is, when they got the alert for the iceberg straight ahead, they reversed the engine so they would slow down. After they started to turn hoping that they would miss the iceberg. Unfortunately they hit the iceberg causing them to puncture 5 air chambers which was bad because if they punctured more than 4 air chambers they would sink. Another reason they did not stay afloat is that they used delicate steel for the hull of the
There are two things that I, myself, think carry responsibility for the wrecking of the magnificent ship, The Titanic. The first one was that I think that the captain was responsible in one way because he didn’t think that the ship could sink, on page eighteen, it states, “Besides, what danger could a few pieces of ice present to an unsinkable ship?”. It shows how the captain thought it couldn't be conquered. Secondly, the captain ignored seven of them. Seven! He would have to have a very large amount of confidence to ignore that many. Last, but not least, is that on page twenty, it says that the captain didn’t think that the lookout needed binoculars. If he had binoculars,
As far as Captain Smith, there are several stories for him. Most of the survivors say they saw him commit suicide by putting a gun in his mouth and some say they saw him in the water with a life jacket. His body was never recovered. Lastly, the two final facts and myths about the Titanic were, “was the Heart of The Ocean” real? And was any of the survivors really saved like Rose was in the movie? For the famous necklace that we all know as “The Heart of the Ocean” is not real. It is based on the famous Hope Diamond that King Louis XVI of France gave to Marie Antoinette to add to her jewelry collection. The Hope Diamond is currently on display at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C. It holds no place in Titanic history. As for survivors being saved like Rose was in the movie that is true. There were only two of the sixteen lifeboats went back to pick up survivors, and they ended up saving six. There were several inquiries that said the reason the life boats did not go back for more people was because it would have been a suicide mission and everyone was spread out and
