After reading the first portion of Invisible Man, the scene that stood out the most to me was when the narrator took Mr. Norton around the countryside. While there the narrator introduced Mr. Norton to Jim Trueblood, who slept with his own daughter. Trueblood mentions that white people have been giving him money and helping him out more. Which is very strange because the college views him as disgusting and hate him very much. The main character did not want Mr. Norton to see this and immediately regretted taking him out. Norton almost seems to relate to Jim because he describe his daughter as pure and beautiful. He also gives Jim one hundred dollars. This greatly impacts the main character because he becomes very angry that Norton gave him

In his novel Invisible Man, Ralph Ellison has developed the invisible man by using the actions of other characters. Through his prophecy, Mr. Norton has secured the destiny of the narrator, himself, and all persons in the novel. Mr. Norton forebodes that the narrator will determine his fate, but Mr. Norton doesn't realize that the fate determined is universal: that every being is invisible and without this knowledge, people are blinded by their own invisibility. The narrator is able to come to terms with this self-realization at the end of the end of the novel, and by doing so, he has become an individual and a free man of society, which in essence, is what Mr. Norton
Right from the commencement of the Invisible Man it’s as if all the odds in the world are constantly being thrown at the story's unnamed narrator. The main obstacle being the narrator’s skin color- as he is a black man in racist, 1930’s era America. It is this “obstacle” that has caused the narrator to be swallowed up in this feeling of banishment and sense of exile- fueled by racial tensions-which in turn becomes a eminent theme of the story’s plot and the narrator’s own life. As the narrator believes that society doesn’t recognize the black people of America (sense of exile), and demonstrates this with a prelude history lesson on the past his own grandparents endured as former slaves and how they now live as supposedly “free people.” These flashbacks reinstate the hatred and feeling the narrator feels as a member of an excommunicated minority group, yet at the same time counteracts the elated emotions the narrator is also trying to use as a facade to fool and win himself over in proving that he isn’t really as invisible as he feels in the world.
Historical information: Invisible Man was published in 1952 by Ralph Ellison. Ellison laments the feeling of despondency and “invisibility” that many African Americans experience in the United States. Ellison uses W.E.B. Dubois, Booker T. Washington and Marcus Garvey as sources for the novel. W.E.B. Dubois wrote The Souls of Black Folk, where Dubois expresses his theory of the double-consciousness possessed by blacks. Booker T. Washington wrote Up from Slavery, which talks about his rise from slavery to freedom. This can be related to the novel in how the narrator rises from not knowing his identify to finding out who he genuinely is. He also directly relates to Washington’s 1895 Atlanta Compromise address in Chapter One, when the narrator writes of his grandparents "About eighty-five years ago they were told that they were free, united with others of our country in everything pertaining to the common good, and, in everything social, separate like the fingers of the hand". Lastly, Marcus Garvey inspires the role of Ras the Exhorter in the novel. Marcus was not as extreme as Ras, but he did believe that black people had to better their lives by banding together, as opposed to obtaining help from white America.

The narrator comes in contact with 3 main characters that greatly shape his life and make him the invisible man that he is. The white men from the ballroom, Dr. Herbert Bledsoe from the college, and the narrator’s grandfather all have a huge impact on the narrator’s life. The narrator’s invisibility first comes up in Chapter One, where he is invited to a community meeting consisting of prestigious white citizens. He comes to this meeting believing that he is to give a speech to represent his high school. He believes that in dictating a speech, the narrator will be recognized by the white community for his intelligence. Unfortunately, he is turned into entertainment when he is forced to fight in a “battle royal” with other black men. After being beaten blindfolded and pushed into an electrocuted carpet, the narrator still gathers up the strength to dictate his speech, only to find the white men “still [talking] and still [laughing], as though deaf with cotton in dirty ears” (p30). The Struggle for an Invisible Man Ellison’s Invisible man is about a man who struggles to find his place in a racist society. His character goes on a plummet from being forced to literally fight to get into college, to being kicked out of the college. After that he moved to the city but was not finding a job he could keep. Then he became a part of the brotherhood, where he was making speeches for the black society. Throughout all of this, Ellison makes the character go through an identity crisis where he faces extreme stereotypes that go against who the character is trying to be, yet strangely also represent his life in a way. As said in an essay, “Invisible Man is full of symbols that reinforce the oppressive power of white society.”(Free) It is my belief that one of Ellison’s main themes of the book is finding individuality in racism. Another theme that I would want to look into is letting other peoples thoughts hold you down. Through Ellison’s use of symbols, metaphors, and thought provoking writing style, the book has many sections that help sort through these two themes.
