Criminals guilty of piracy may be sentenced up to 5 years in prison and fined up to 250,000 dollars. Crimes such as piracy are very serious, as well as the punishments. Businesses who promote and commit piracy and other similar need to be prosecuted, and organizations should do everything they can to win legal battles. Because businesses who steal media promote piracy and creators of the media are losing potential money, it is appropriate for organizations such as the Motion Picture Association of America to use charged language like "piracy" to win legal battles. Businesses who pirate movies and songs need to be prosecuted, because they make people view piracy as morally fine and promote it. In the article "When Stealing Isn't Stealing," by Stuart P. Green, …show more content…
An excerpt from the article states, "People who work hard to produce creative works are entitled to enjoy legal protection to reap the benefits of their labors." Artists, actors, producers, and many other media jobs work hard to create original movies and songs to share to the public for a small cost. This small cost that is paid when their work is bought is how they put food on their table. Without the money, they may not be able to live the same lifestyle. Organizations should win legal battles over these money-stealing businesses by using emotionally charged language, so media creators are not robbed of potential money. Information found in the text expressed that the law stated that anything of value is considered property. If one downloads something from the internet that would usually cost money, they are stealing, and potential money for the creators of the media is lost. Therefore, organizations should use emotionally charged language if it means they will win more legal
One reason why I think people should be prosecuted to an extent is because it is a harmless crime. People in the world have gotten a lesser charge for things that are worst than piracy. Some of the crimes actually can involve hurting others yet they get a lesser crime. On a website
Some people think they shouldn’t be prosecuted for online piracy. In my opinion they should get prosecuted.
Everybody nowadays knows that our country is built up on progress. We all give everything to our daily lives and our jobs. We are being paid for the work we give. This money comes from our boss, who gets money for what we helped him with. Well, what about the action pictures workers, or the music companies that spend ages to complete a project? They have pretty hard jobs and need good pay. If we download their work illegally, they would lose money and we would not have more of what they do. Although, by paying for what we listen or watch the hollywood and music business will grow. We would have more of what we want if we just pay for it. After all, you are like everybody else. Have compassion and see that there is no point of stealing. You are only hurting people when you do it.
Darrell Panethiere wrote in “The Persistence Of Piracy” on page 2 that “'Piracy refers to the activity of manufacturing unauthorised copies ('pirate copies') of protected material and dealing with such copies by way of distribution and

Illegal Piracy has been a problem for many musical artist. The law is not really enforced on piracy. Many people get away with it and very few get prosecuted with a fine . Musicians spend time to make music for people and to make money for their own reasons, like for food or clothes. Movie makers are also victims of Illegal Piracy, along with many others, piracy to them should be
The Global music industry makes around $43.9 billion dollars a year. $12.5 billion of that is lost each year due to Piracy in the music industry and 70% of online users find nothing wrong with online piracy (“Music’s Last Decade: Sales Cut in Half”). Is it wrong? Is music piracy stealing? This topic is said to have inspired Charles W. Moore to illustrate these points in his essay. Charles W. Moore writes the essay “Is Music Piracy Stealing?” and tries to answer his own question. Moore starts off by explaining that current day pirates simply do not care about copyright laws. He goes into detail about the philosophy, ethics, and morality of the threat to the free exchange of music over the Internet. Moore says, “Digital copywriting is as serious and criminal as stealing a CD from a record shop or a DVD from a video shop” (242). The subject on piracy is a controversial and an argumentative subject. Although Moore gives many great examples throughout his essay, he also has some faulty reasoning such as the root question of his argument is not provable, his factual data is excessive, he has lousy introduction and closing paragraphs, and his views are biased.
I believe that people should be charged with online piracy because their stealing someone's work, who dedicated their time and effort in creating their product. We need to stop online piracy to benefit not only the companies that are being stolen from, but to benefit the economy. Online piracy affects everyone and it needs to be stopped. While you may think that you're saving money, actually just hurting and worsening your country's economy.
Throughout the whole article, the author’s position is clear when he states that ‘stealing is wrong’ even though the author does not specifically state his ground. The language that he uses such as “this indicates that the majority of people in the study acknowledged that to download music for free, in effect, stealing it, was wrong” shows the inclination of biasedness toward stealing is wrong. The author attempts to induce the readers to belief his opinion by providing supporting sources that illustrates stealing is
Many companies have had to deal with issue of one illegally downloading music and taking as well as using it for their own. Over time, the term for this issue has became known as "piracy." Regarding the evidence in the article, organizations such as the Motion Picture Association of America should not use emotionally charged language such as "piracy" to win legal battles.
Piracy especially in the case of films are an ever-growing concern. Whilst major film studios like Universal Pictures
Many laws and punishments have been written to prevent piracy and its consequences. In 1897, Congress established a branch entitled The U.S. Copyright Office, which constructs and enforces copyright law. The complexity of the penalty has grown along with the excessive abuse of pirated content (Congress). Simply scribbling over a copyright notice in a book is a twenty-five thousand dollar fine. If more than one act of intentional copyright infringement is committed within a six month period, the culprit may be fined a sum worth a given ratio to the value of the stolen products as well as a sentenced of one to five years in prison. given the severity of the situation, fines can range from five hundred thousand to one million dollars (Stim, 315-319). The prison sentence can also be extended to up to ten years.
Piracy is usually determined as a seizure of property (ship, airplane or software) that holds no commission from the owner (“Piracy” 1). It is mostly linked to the dirty, bearded men that sailed the seven seas and robed merchant ships or ships that carried a valuable cargo. This however, was not the case in the late eighties and is definitely not the case today in the nineties. Now software pirates copy software without the permission of the company for their own personal benefits. Since piracy interrupts trade between nations it has been considered to be an offense against international law (“Piracy” 1). While the pirates in the medieval age roamed for plunder on the high seas, pirate radio and television stations broadcast, unauthorized
A recent 60 minutes episode put a bad spin on piracy. Big-time director Steven Soderbergh states that "piracy is costing Hollywood $6 billion a year at the box office" however he fails to mention the heavy profits Hollywood continues to make. It's apparent the media continues to make money when one realizes the volume of advertisements and media surrounding us nearly every day. Even with piracy's vast subculture of filesharers, it fails to scratch the surface of Hollywood's grip on the collective wallet of the world. Loss is loss, and the corporations have the right to protect their assets, but intentionally skewing a supposedly nonbiased news program is simply wrong. The American public deserves the truth, and by not exposing both sides of the issue, 60 minutes has failed their duty to report the truth to the public.
