As a first generation college student emerging from a low income Hispanic family, it is imperative that I attain a college degree in order to set an example for my siblings, make my parents proud, and not be a statistic. Many schools in urban areas, for example in Paterson, do not stress the importance of a higher degree. These schools do not prepare students for the application process for universities and scholarships. I have had the privilege to attend a charter school that thrives on college acceptances where most students are going to either a university or the military force. SAT scores are also below the nation’s average. I am working with my friend in a non-profit organization with the mission of fostering interest in careers in finance
I feel that the purpose for college is to get a higher education in the field you are interested in. For me, my purpose is to get a degree in Elementary Education, which would allow me to teach in an elementary classroom. While there are many benefits to going to college such as making new connections, and finding what you enjoy, I feel that getting a degree is the most worthwhile thing. While college isn’t for some people, I feel the people who
I would like to attend college because today college is no longer a recommendation but in fact a necessity for a successful career. I believe that if I were to limit my education to solely a High School diploma or G.E.D I would be limiting my career choices as well. Many jobs will or do require at least a two-year college degree and my career choice requires at least a four-year college degree. Aside from college being vital in finding a successful job it will allow me to broaden my experience in life and allow me to travel and meet new people. Through college, I can acquire new skills and learn things that I may have never even thought of before. I will also be able to travel and study abroad which will allow me to see places I have never

Although that statement made great sense, I was still not convinced I would not waste my time or money chasing a degree which may not even matter with my job after the Army. Finally, I came across a degree offered by TUI which I could use for any job, and it majors in an area that I have more than 16 years’ experience in. Every year in June, thousands of students from around the world throw their graduation caps in the air in honor of finally having completed High School. Out of these thousands of students, more than half of them are about to embark on the most rewarding and fun, yet stressful four years of their life: college. Most of us dream about going to a big, fancy college from the time we learned what a college was, while the rest of us may have just started to get the ball rolling the beginning of our Senior Year. Regardless of how you chose to approach preparing for college, we all know that it is going to be one of the greatest times of our lives. As we grow up and mature, we begin to wish we had more freedom, we wish our parents weren’t so strict or that we didn’t have to be the perfect child all the time. With college life just around the corner, students become increasingly excited as they finally realize that their parents won’t be breathing down their neck telling them everything they must do. College life allows students to have the freedom to finally make all of their own decisions, such as underage drinking. Allowing them to become independent, strong-willed individuals one bad choice at a time. Students who drink are often faced with a range of consequences, from health impairments to academic failure.

I am in the right place mentally at this stage in my life and feel like I can fully invest in this experience and make it truly a success and representation of what I can do. I am also highly motivated by the fact that my career is truly stalled because I am not competition for someone that has equal experience and a degree. I plan to conquer that competition through this process.
