As Meredith Grey, my fictional idol from Grey’s anatomy would say, “Progress looks like a bunch of failures”. A main focus of this semester was learning our audience, and convincing people of things through writing and or visuals using ethos pathos and or logos. I did not see the connections of any of my papers from the first to second semester at first. But my memoir from the first semester and my campaign project from this semester both use pathos, emotion. For me it was easiest to write about the pathos, but the ethos and logos part was out of my reach. I left some of my comfort writing the campaign paper using all 3 and it gave me a better understanding as a writer to keep in mind who am I talking to, what message am I trying to get across
Alone, the use of only ethos, pathos, or logos would make for a semi-interesting story, but together, they tell a believable account of real events. Beatty makes use of all three techniques to connect with her audience and share her own story as well as hard facts that verify the events. The powerful combination of ethos, pathos, and logos conveys Beatty’s story convincingly.

The use of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos is presented in the three videos provided through a wide array of examples. In the first video, Drunk History- Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks, the writers use of comedy was used to provide a broad narration of a particular civil rights movement. Logos is a form of persuasion through the “[representation] of arguments and evidence in the matter under discussion” (Campbell 38). In the first video, the use of logos was presented by their wardrobe selection. The use of old time clothing created an antique like structure that would capture the viewers. The rhetorical device that I thought was most effective was his use of Pathos. I believe his purpose for using this type of rhetoric is to reach the heart of those he was writing to in hopes of moving them so much so that they feel a, “call to action,” so to speak. While some may argue that Martin Luther King, Jr.’s(MLK) use of logos was most effective, I disagree because while it is possible to persuade someone with logic, wouldn’t you feel compelled to act immediately if something moves your heart rather than waiting for your brain to convince your heart and then act. This article shows great details of how bad writing can be fixed. The article begins by showing logos of what high school and college students are struggling with the most. The reason is that it states key examples of what the students at New Dorp high school aren’t good at. The article shows a lot of opinion from teachers by telling their ways of fixing the students. It is also repetitive by saying that the main reason the kids are not good writers is because they are lazy. In certain ways, this article is using pathos by the teachers. I do think the writer could have used more proven facts.
As I began to read this article I noticed that logos was definitely used as one of the rhetorical appeals. The author attempts to persuade his audience by making a claim and providing some type of proof after each claim. For example, “Papa John’s says it has been pulling advertising associated with the NFL. The league, it says, has given some feature spots in return.” This quote was provided after the author mentions how, “Papa John’s is no longer going to advertise with the NFL.” The first example of how he makes a logical appeal. Using different techniques, authors make themselves more believable and are able to connect more with readers in order to convince them of their argument. Rhetoric involves consideration of the speaker, the audience, and the subject. The speaker uses the aspects of the rhetoric triangle to connect with the audience and agree with them about the subject. The rhetorical triangle includes the elements of ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is proving the speaker’s credibility, logos uses logic, and emotion is labeled as pathos. By using these strategies in writing, authors are able to achieve their purpose. In the articles “Alone in the Crowd” and “As technology Gets Better, Will Society Get Worse?,” Michael Price and Tim Wu, respectively acknowledge the effects of technological advances. While both Price and Wu use effective rhetorical strategies in their articles, one presents their argument in a more persuasive manner. Wu effectively convinces his audience that as a society we continue to advance technologically, but for the wrong reasons. Price references an interview with Sherry Turkle, to convey his opinion that the social media frenzy consumes our society. Price and Wu both present their point of view, but Wu has more factual information to justify his argument. In the music video, many rhetorical strategies were used to enhance the experience of the audience. For example, one scene in the video introduced the protagonist –Mika, who is a high school kid that gets bullied by his classmates. And by his depress expressions; we can’t help but to create sympathy to the character. Meanwhile, such idea to play on audience’s emotional feeling is exactly the rhetorical strategies of Pathos. Secondly, an interesting shot of Mika and Ariana Grande were presented by them mixing a pot of rats, and poisons.
In building a good paper we need to identify and use the corresponding pathos, logos, and ethos, ethos being for example of a person trying to convince others of the credibility of the presenter, meaning the quality of belief or the worthiness of trust in the work. Pathos, the appeal to an emotional response for instance, how a crime of passion would have an appeal to the emotions the persons involved in the crime and logos, being an appeal to logic in any given situation. These main appeal types I have found important and try to see them in most of the researching I have done, interestingly I have found much more than I had expected and, especially when I researched serial killers, why serial killers kill and all the involved arguments as well as why a person would get a tattoo of a serial killer portrait. Understanding how to make annotations when citing someone and correctly quoting them is very important, to be able to give proper credit where it is due. In the text Suzanne adds sentences that are two methods of appeal, the three methods of appeal are all well balanced which makes the text so effective. This is demonstrated at the beginning of the passage, “Putting pen to paper stimulates the brain like nothing else, even in this age of emails, texts and tweets.” This piece of text is ethos, and it is the strongest ethos given because Suzanne addresses the opposing view respectfully while using empathy. This strengthens the entire argument and mostly boosts up the argument by starting with this powerful ethos in the beginning. The audience will listen to this powerful ethos at the beginning of the argument and then will be intrigued. Suzanne adds a small paragraph that is a mixture of both, pathos and logos. This is shown towards the middle of the passage, “Interestingly, a few years ago, the College Board found that students who wrote in cursive for the essay portion of the SAT scored slightly higher than those who printed, with experts believe is because the speed and efficiency of writing in cursive allowed the students to focus on the content of their essay.” This evidence is the strongest pathos in the text because it intrigues the audience and especially it shocks students that cursive could improve your SAT scores. Students will feel shock and would grow more interest in cursive. This strengthens the overall argument by explaining that cursive could help your future. Many people and especially kids think about their future. Learning that cursive could improve your SAT scores and help you get a better future makes the whole argument very effective. Throughout the passage Suzanne also adds many logos, the most effective one is the one that is mixed with pathos. I find logos from the text, it is in the beginning of the text. The author talks about how many books that her writes and it also has specific years and name on the text. In my opinion, the most obvious example of the ethos is the sentences that the author’s writing, because the author is the professional person in the writing area, so that I think she has the power to let reader believes what she said and what she think. There also have some instances to firm the main idea. In the third paragraph, the author uses the feeling of people to represent sometimes people wants to be the person like them, for example “people tend to look at …… they have to tell” some of people desire to be the writer because they think they can get lots of money.
