The thing that caught my attention the most about this poster is the American colors along with the vegetables grown from a victory garden. They used the American colors, red, white and blue, but they also used colors that the real vegetables would have such as, yellow, green, red, and orange. They used these colors to sparkle the Americans to plant victory gardens and grow their own food. They, again, have the American red, white, and blue to show patriotism. Along with this they have vegetables that you may find in a home grown garden. These symbol were used to spark patriotism and direct American to grow victory gardens. This posters purpose was to both conserve materials and increase productivity. This poster fails under this categories
Finally, we decided to focus on the design and style of the posters, as well as some of the rhetoric appeals used, rather than talking about the topic itself. Thus, we concluded that our main point would be what we considered to be our strongest aspect of the posters, which we determined was the balance between pathos and logos in the posters. By choosing two posters to display data and facts, and two to display emotion-evoking images and messages, we determined that we provided enough variety of information so that an individual that is either interested in the facts of this topic or that is interested in the morality of this topic could be persuaded to pursue more information on this topic, or even heed our call for advocacy. Although we were met with some issues concerning time and a difference in both topic and design choices, we completed the poster series in a manner we were quite satisfied
This memorial is very effective in the way the message and symbols are presented. The memorial emphasizes the United States’ side of the war and how it affected the country. The ways the illustrations are depicted are accurate in a sense that it only shows the effects it had to the U.S through symbolism. The way nationalism is used though the symbols are directly connected to the war and the nationalism that is emphasized in that setting. The layout and design is used to help build that intensifying persuasion. Persuasion can be found in many different ways an in the case of this memorial, it is found through the symbols, layout, and materials used to put the WWII memorial together.
This poster looks the way it does because it seems to glorify war with many hot colors (red, orange and yellow) and being an exceptional warrior. The people in the background seem to be in pain and dying. There also appear to be rather large explosions in the background. The woman in this advertisement is wearing an outfit that looks very similar to that of Rosie the Riveter, the main icon for the Women in War Jobs Campaign. Rosie was depicted as a strong, independent woman. Her presence in advertisements convinced many women that it was their duty to join the workforce to support the war. It is presumed that this is the reason Harris would design the woman to look like Rosie. Orange traffic cones are usually used to show that there are people working, and that you should yield to them. The orange cone in the background of this poster could represent that the factory is a dangerous place, and workers need to be careful while working. This was one of the main reasons women didn’t have jobs in the first place. Factories were dangerous environments. The phrase in the top right, “Do the job HE left behind,” seems to have a sarcastic tone to it. It implies that since the men were enlisted in the war, the only people left to do their jobs in the factory were women. It seems ironic that a poster that was meant to encourage women to join the work force would also carry such a negative tone
While analyzing this, I found it difficult to understand why and how this poster was made. There was no author, website or links associated; I simply typed in “Posters that mean something powerful.” And this appeared in google images. I believe the mystery of how and where this image came from makes its rhetorical appeal more of “ethos”. The writer who created this wanted readers to feel emotionally connect to the image. Immediately your visually pulled into an image that shows a good amount of blood. Blood makes you ask the question why or how is something okay. The fact that blood is coming from two pencils makes me link the image to education. This image called me to write about how the public school system is leading children into
The poster “No Blood for Oil” has a big history that is the war, the unique content, and the idea is interesting. The war between Iraq and Kuwait started in 1990, there are two beliefs why the war begins: the first one is because of “defending Kuwait’s freedom, and second defending oil resources” ("The Graphic Imperative.") The war changed the climate of counties that were close to Kuwait, because of the burning oil that made a black smoke around Kuwait. The black snow that was in Kuwait, because of the burned oil had created a hard life for people and animals in that period of time. Steven Lyons created his poster to show what was happening in Kuwait. The poster shows an armed man that was ready to fight. He has everything to go to the war, and fight for the country. The item I would like to talk about today is the 2017 Western Michigan University football team’s poster. Every year before the season our football team releases a poster listing the team slogan and schedule for the upcoming season. I believe after four years here at Western Michigan University that the posters main purpose is to build hype and to get students to obviously come to the game. The poster for this year’s team has drawn me in since day one. I think the background of the photo allows the main subjects in the photo to really stand out. I also think that this schedule/poster allows a student like myself to keep up to date when the team is playing at Waldo Stadium. I strongly believe that this poster is an excellent example of graphic design and communication.
For my propaganda poster, I chose the slogan “Spark The Resistance” because the poster was meant to say, light dynamites and start a resistance. The image I created is a dynamite lit up with sparks with a British resistance symbol in the background. There are six blue parachutes falling down from the top of the poster; I selected this image because I wanted the encourage people to plant the dynamites and resist the conquerors. The image helps represent the slogan by sparking the dynamites can start the resistance. In addition, I chose to use the colors blue, red, white, and orange; they help develop the message because blue, white, and white represent the resistance of the British powers. The readability tool used was a suitability assessment of material (SAM) score sheet. When making the poster the SAM score sheet was utilized by designing certain parts in via what scored the highest on the SAM scoresheet, the content of the poster had a clear purpose as it explicitly and clearly states that cultural diversity is not an issue, it doesn’t use facts and attempts to provoke a readers response so that it also covers learning stimulation, motivation and only the most relevant information was mentioned. As aforementioned from simple language being used the literacy demand of the poster was minimal. The graphics used in the poster is friendly and contains a large amount of whitespace and is very relevant to cultural competency and lists, graphs and tables were chosen to be completely omitted. Something I have learned this semester that is bigger than what has been presented was the realization of the women of this country, who had gone to work during World War II, while the men had gone to war. I never really knew how important this opportunity had been as a turning point for all women in regards to having the ability to prove they could contribute to society and to the patriotism of this country acknowledging the accomplishments of fulfilling the same jobs the men had been involved in.
In chapter 7, they use posters to show how they grabbed Americans attention. The core values the posters displayed were to grab the attention of Americans by tell a powerful message and to get the message across the states. The posters would try to get the attention out by using someone or something famous and show people in war with writing on it. This would help get people’s attention and might help them be convinced to join the war somehow. Like joining the arm forces or to buy war bonds to help pay for the war. Each government issued poster had a different purpose in the United States, usually with a prase encouraging Americans to “ration their food, buy war bonds, and basically perform everyday tasks in support of the war effort” (Little). A 1942 poster by famous American artist Norman Rockwell named Let’s give him Enough and On Time (plate 5) reveals this common use of phrasing in posters.
