Factors that may lead to an individual being more at risk of abuse than others might include mental capacity. The vulnerable person may suffer from conditions such as dementia and not have a full understanding of what is happening. It might be the person is unable to report abuse due to lack of verbal skills caused by strokes. Location can also cause a person to be more at risk of abuse, for example someone who is bed bound or spends a lot of time in their room is more at risk compared to someone who spends a lot of time in the communal rooms. Someone who is being care for by a untrained carer may be at a higher risk of abuse. Accidental abuse caused by carers can be caused by lack of knowledge or confidence. 2.1 Explain the actions to take if there are suspicions that an individual is being abused. If abuse is suspected it is my duty to protect the vulnerable person. My first action would be to remove the person from the abuse/abuser. Once the person is safe from harm it is my responsibility to report any suspicions I have to my manager verbally, later recording my suspicions in a written report. I would keep safe any evidence of abuse which I would then hand over for further examination or investigation. 2.2 Explain the actions to take if an individual alleges that they are being abused. Abuse can happen anywhere anytime, but especially to vulnerable people, ie Children, elderly people, people with disabilities, people with learning difficulties. It can even happen in places people should be safe, ie hospitals, residential/ nursing homes, schools, daycare/ nurseries, centres etc.

No-one deserves to be abused, be that physically, emotionally or sexually and the same rules apply that no child or young person should be subjected to neglect. It is every child’s right to live without fear of harm or abuse.
If any professional becomes concerned that a child might be at risk of abuse, be it physical, sexual, emotional or neglect, it is their legal duty to pass on such concerns to the appropriate professionals who can assess if and what action should be taken. In cases where it will not put the child at greater risk or danger, the parents / carers of the child will be informed that such action has been taken.
When in a health and social care environment, there are always strategies and procedures in place which will help individuals to be at minimal risk of abuse. However there needs to be specific procedures in place that will help decrease any amount of risk.
Abuse may be revealed in a number of different ways. For example you may find that someone wants to tell you about it because they trust you. Also it might be from someone who has observed the abuse taking place, e.g. resident seeing a care worker shaking another resident because they were too slow getting dressed. The abuse is disclosed to the professional, sometimes with a request for confidentiality.
Abuse can occur from a lack of training or feeling they are superior so they feel they can abuse them because they are vulnerable.
‘If I suspect abuse through noticing a sign of physical abuse or change in the behaviour of an individual, I will make sure that I ask the individual what has happened telling the individual the changes that I have noticed. If it is in my place of work and the name of the person that abused the individual is known, whether staff or another service user, I must also record and report this. I will listen to the individual carefully; it is up to them to tell me, I would not ask them any questions about this as this is not part of my job role and would stay calm.I will make sure that I record what the individual tells me using the individual’s own words.
